Rev. McLawhorn is a
native of Roxobel, and
is married to Diane
McLawhorn. Their son -
Sgt. Will A. McLawhorn
Jr. - was killed in ac
tion on Dec. 12, 2010.
The couple also has a
daughter, Melanie, and
two grandchildren.
Rev. McLawhorn cur
rently is pastor of Meno-
la Baptist Church, where
he has served since
2016. He retired from
Conway Baptist Church
in 2013 after 16 years of
service. He also served
as Pastor of Western
Prong Baptist Church
in Whiteville and Lasker
Baptist Church.
A 1966 graduate of
Bertie High School, Rev.
McLawhorn is a Viet
nam era veteran, having
joined the U.S. Air Force
in 1968. He served four
years and was stationed
in Germany and Japan
as a Voice Intercept Spe
cialist with training in
the Russian language.
He is a 1976 graduate
of Chowan University
in Murfreesboro and of
Gardner Webb Universi
ty. He earned a Masters
of Divinity degree from
Southeastern Baptist
Theological Seminary
in 1982.

event was no exception.

ty celebrates 25 years
of hope.
The 25th annual Ber
tie County Relay for
Life was held Friday,
May 18 at Roy L. Bond
Jr. Stadium.
It was a night of re
membrance, celebra
tion and entertain
ment.
The event’s entertain
ment began at 5 p.m.
with music from B&E
DJ Services, and a pre
sentation from the Ber
tie High School drum
line at 5:30 p.m.
“Get Ready to Relay”
kicked off with opening
ceremonies at 6 p.m.

man Cherry served as
Master of Ceremonies.
According to Bertie
County American Can
cer Society President
Bobbie Parker, Bertie
County was the first
county in North Caro
lina to host a Relay for
Life event.
The guest speaker
for the program was Dr.
Catherine Edmonds. Dr.
Edmonds is the Bertie
County Schools Super
intendent and two-time
cancer survivor.

Take Back event successful locally, nationally

Back Day was a success in
Bertie County.
On April 28, the Windsor
Police Department hosted its
first National Take Back Day
for 2018, and collected 10
pounds of unused prescrip
tion drugs.
The event was held at Pitt
man’s Pharmacy on Granville
Street.
“Bill and Alice Pittman have
been instrumental in keep
ing these expired and unused
drugs from being used ille
gally, and keeping the chil
dren of Windsor and Bertie
County safe,” Windsor Police
Chief Todd Lane said. “A lot
of these drugs could be mis
taken for candy.”
The successful event in
Bertie County was similar
statewide. N.C. Insurance
Commissioner Mike Causey
announced the state set re
cords, as 32,247 pounds of
unused prescription medi
cations were delivered to a
state-approved incinerator to
