In fact, Sackrison had a smile on his face as he talked about his last day and retiring as President at Vidant Bertie Hospi tal and Vidant Chowan Hospital in Edenton. His mind was not focused so much on whether he’d eat a steak dinner and make an evening toast at Watermans or wherever, but on lunch - the last one - with his administrative team. The clock was ticking fast on the last hours of a long career spent working in health care with the last 15 years as the top guy in Windsor and Edenton. “It’s time to retire,” he said. “I’ve been in health career for almost 45 years. It’s time to do something different and let someone else have the reins.” Sackrison and wife of 25 years, Sandy, who is not retiring from lead ing Vidant’s radiology department, are moving their base of operations to their home in Wilm ington. How is Sack rison, a spry 65-years- old, going to spend his time? Playstation? Sail around the world? “I’m not worried about retirement. I’ll do some volunteer work, consulting work, im prove my golf game and see what life brings,” he said. Friday, he reached a new pinnacle in his professional career, officially taking the oath of office as Chief of Po lice in Windsor. “1 have worked as a sheriff’s deputy, shift supervisor, de tective, sergeant and lieuten ant, and 1 have enjoyed each step along the way,” Chief ■lackson said. “I’ve always be lieved when the next step of your career presented itself, you should move forward.” Born and raised on White Oak Road between Askewville and Windsor, Chief Jackson grew up in Bertie County and has spent most of his life in the region he calls home. This group is dedicated to empowering young adults to become leaders through civic engagement and service to their communities. Those making the trek through Windsor included Alex Lopez- Perez, Neeharika Thuravil, Hope McGraw, Max Wang and Sakib Jalal. In 2013, a group of Rutgers students and alumni set out to make dreams cOme true. They created a group now called the Dream Project. Their pur pose was to raise awareness and monies for the Embrace See DREAM, 5 WINDSOR - Back to school bells will be ring ing soon enough. Bertie County Public Schools has released their 2018-2019 school year calendars for the traditional elemen tary, middle and high schools, Aulander El ementary School and Bertie Early College High School. This year’s calendar brings a change the Ber tie High School. Last year all three of the Bertie County pub lic high schools’ calen dar was different than the other traditional schools. The high schools’ were on a college cal endar schedule, which meant the schools, started earlier than the others and started sum mer break before the other schools were re leased. For the 2018-2019 school year, Bertie High School will follow the traditional school cal endar. All of the Bertie Coun ty traditional schools including Bertie High School, Bertie Middle School, Colerain El ementary School, West Bertie Elementary School and Windsor El ementary School will begin their academic year for students on Monday, Aug. 27. Teachers have option al workdays Monday, Aug. 13 through Friday, Aug. 17 and mandatory workdays Monday, Aug. 20 through Thursday, Aug 23. Thanksgiving break will begin with a 1 p.m. early release on Wednesday, Nov. 21 and schools will be closed Thursday, Nov. 22 and Friday, Nov. 23. Christmas break will begin with a 1 p.m. early release Thursday, Dec. 20 and schools will be closed Friday, Dec. 21 through Wednesday, Jan. 2.
