The facility’s director, Dr. William Ballance, was ad vised of this national recog nition and congratulated for the excellence of the servic es being provided. The Vidant Bertie Hospital laboratory is one of more than 8,000 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide. “1 could not be more proud of the Vidant Bertie Lab. The lab team members work diligently each day to be the best at what they do, and they deliver the care with a hometown touch that puts our patients at ease. They are top-notch people,” said Dr. Ballance. “The Vidant Bertie Hospi tal laboratory team consis tently practices the mission of Vidant Health to improve the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina. Book details fate of 'Dorothie' LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - One local woman has completed her husband’s dream. For over 25 years, Don Up church, a local radio broad caster and noted historian, researched and sorted clues about the fate of the Dorothie. The Dorothie was a was a flat, copper bottom boat that sank while traveling up the Chowan River on its way to the Chesa peake Bay. According to Upchurch’s wife, Lucy Daniels, he heard the sto ry of the Dismal Swamp Schoo ner as written by former author and historian, F. Roy Johnson, during an interview in 1966. The story was about the Dor othie sinking in the late 1500’s somewhere near Bennett’s Creek. “According to legends the boat was last spotted in the early 1800’s already deca5ang,” said Daniels. Up until his death in 2015, Up church sought any information he could find about the Doroth ie and the Lost Colony to pos sibly learn information about their journey inland. “Don began buying books mentioning the Chowan River and Albemarle Sound from 1584 through 1587,” said Daniels. But Upchurch took his re search beyond what he found in books already published- “He started talking to the lo cals. He interviewed Johnson and Harry Ward seeking infor mation about the fate of the Dorothie,” she added. According to Daniels, her hus band described his research as pieces of a puzzle that fell to gether. “His research took many years. It was about 20 solid years of reading and research,” See BOOK, A5 THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR-It’s official. The Bertie County Board of Elections has certified incumbent John Holley as the win ner of the Democratic nomination for sheriff. The certification of the election results come two months after the primary in which Holley was selected by more than 70 percent of voters. Adrian L. Bowen, a re tired N.C. Highway Pa trol officer, challenged Sheriff Holley for the Democratic nomina tion, but Bertie County citizen Virginia Clarke challenged his residen cy. Following a hearing, the Bertie County Board of Elections agreed with Clarke, and ruled Bowen was ineligible to seek office in Bertie County. Bowen appealed the decision to the N.C. Board of Elections and Ethics, and the board granted a stay of certi fying results until the board could convene to hear the appeal. Once the election was held, the board met and dismissed the appeal as moot since Holley hand ily won the primary. On July 24, the Bertie County Elections Board met and canvassed for the sheriff’s primary. See CERTIFIED, A5 Dress code to be enforced Restraining order issued against HCLA GENE MOTLEY Roanoke-Chowan News-Heraid WINDSOR - Senior Resident Su perior Court Judge Cy Grant has granted a temporary restrain ing order against former char ter school Heritage Collegiate Leadership Academy (HCLA) and its director. Dr. Kashi Ba- zemore. Global Education Resources (GER) sought the restraining order in an attempt to recover furniture, equipment, comput ers, and school-related items including school buses. Some of these items have al legedly been removed from the HCLA campus site off County Farm Road in Windsor, but the restraining order calls for thbir return. Meanwhile, a hearing on the issuance of a preliminary in junction is scheduled to be heard in Bertie County Supe rior Court in Windsor at 2 p.m. See ORDER, A3 LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR-Bertie Coun ty Schools wants to re mind parents the em phasis on following the dress code policy. With schools in Ber tie County starting over the next month, school officials say now is a good time for parents and students to famil iarize themselves with the mandatory dress code policy. Under the board pol icy 4316, the elemen tary, middle and high schools have their own guidelines for the school year. “The policy at the high school will be strictly enforced this year,” said Bertie High School/STEM Academy Assistant Principal An tonio Hoggard. “Many people do not know that the uniform policy goes into great detail, even when it comes down to jewelry and headwear. It is im portant for students to dress in the proper shirts and pants. That is paramount.
