Last week, the Wind sor Board of Commis sioners took another step in the process of getting federal funds into the hands of those damaged by Hurricane Matthew. The budget currently covers 30 acquisitions and 10 elevations. A few of the homes ap proved for assistance are not currently in the budget because they have been deemed his toric structures. Those structures will be added once the State Historic Preservation Office has approved them. Commissioner Cathy Wilson asked, “So you don’t see any problem with those, it’s just a little extra red tape?” Chris Hilbert of Hol land Consulting Plan ners said there were no issues, and added the town dealt with similar situations with previ ous floods. National Dog Day will be celebrated from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Satur day, Aug. 25 at the Ber tie County Humane So ciety, 217 County Farm Rd. in Windsor. “I started volunteer ing at the humane so ciety in November of last year and at one of the board meeting 1 suggested holding the event to celebrate Na tional Dog Day (which will be Sunday, Aug. 26), and bring some spotlight to the Bertie County Humane Soci ety,” said Bertie County Humane Society Volun teer Tina Fielder. According to Fielder, National Dog Day rec ognizes all breeds of dogs and promotes the adoption of dogs. Regan, along with his Pub lic Information Officer, Sharon Martin, first visited Aulander Elementary School. While there, Regan read the book, “The Day the Crayons Quit” to Marlina Perry’s kinder garten class. He also spent some time talk ing to the children and distrib uted activity books, stickers and environmental-friendly temporary tattoos. Bertie County Schools Su perintendent Dr. Catherine Edmonds joined Regan for his ‘visit in Aulander, and partici pated in pictures with him and the students. Regan’s last stop of the visit was to Bertie Early College High School. Regan visited with Mark Schaaps’ 9th grade earth and environmental science class. Vidant Bertie awards grants BY LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - Numerous grants have been awarded. Vidant Bertie Hospital De velopment Council recognized its 15 2018-2019 Community Benefit Grants recipients last month. “I work closely with the coun cil and I am glad each of you are here to accept the grant checks,” said Vidant Bertie Hos pital Marketing and Public Rela tions Director LuAnn Joyner. This is the 13th year Vidant Bertie Hospital has held the grant program, and thus far has awarded $1.3 million over those years. According to Joyner, the $100,000 grant funding comes from Vidant Health each year. Roanoke-Chowan Commu nity Health Center (RCCHC) re ceived a grant for its Prescrip tion Assistance Program (PAP). The program focuses on providing access to affordable medication for the un/underin sured citizens of Bertie County.
