traffic stops led to three
people facing drug
charges last week.
Windsor Police Chief
Justin Jackson said of
ficers made arrests
Aug. 23 and Aug. 24 fol
lowing traffic stops in
which drugs were con
fiscated.
On Aug. 23, Windsor
Police Lt. Frank Ratzlaff
observed a car being
driven by a person he
knew had a revoked li
cense, so he stopped
the vehicle.
Chief Jackson and
Officer Jessie Mizelle
came to offer assis
tance, and consent
was obtained from the
driver to search the ve
hicle.
Lt. Ratzlaff reported
numerous empty heroin
packages were located,
as well as a substance
which was field tested
and determined to be
heroin.
The driver - Veronica
James - was asked if
she had any other ille
gal items, and she sur
rendered two needles

Gang Unit were working
in Lewiston Woodviile.
Sgt. Martin Phelps of
the Narcotics/Drug Unit
reportedly approached
Victor Speller at the in
ternet sweepstakes, but
Speller took off on foot
before Sgt. Phelps took
him into custody.
Speller was arrested
and charged with pos
session with intent to
sell and deliver cocaine,
possession with intent
to sell and deliver mari
juana, maintaining a
vehicle to keep/store a
controlled substance,
possession of drug par
aphernalia and resist,
delay and/or obstruct
an officer.
He was placed un
der a $20,000 secured

and Korean War veter
ans.
The Bertie County
Bremch of the NAACP
plans to honor veter
ans of the two wars
along with law enforce
ment personnel later
this year.
Currently, organizers

are trying to get a list of
Bertie County veterans
who served in those
two wars.
“We need help in
identifying these indi
viduals,” said Vivian
Phillips Clarke, chair
of the Veterans Affairs
Committee. “If you are

‘Dog Day’ celebrated

WINDSOR - Let’s hear it for the
dogs.
The Bertie County Humane
society celebrated National
Dog Day from 10 a.m. until 4
p.m. last Saturday at their com
plex at 217 County Farm Road.
According to the Bertie Coun
ty Human Society Volunteer
Tina Fielder, she started volun
teering with the humane society
in November of last year and at
one of the board meetings she
suggested holding the event to
celebrate National Dog Day.
“1 thought it would bring
some spotlight to the Bertie
County Humane Society,” Field
er added.
National Dog Day was recog
nized across the country on
Sunday, Aug. 26.
According to Fielder, National
Dog Day recognizes all breeds
of dogs and promotes the adop
tion of dogs.
The events hosted vendors,
activities and refreshments
for dog owners and their four
legged friends of all ages.

produced its first cor
rectional officer.
Robert Russell, 20,
graduated from Cor
rectional Officer Basic
Training in Salemburg
earlier the month.
Russell is the first
student from Bertie
High School’s Public
Safety Program to be
come a correctional
officer for the Depart
ment of Public Safety.
Russell, who now
works at Bertie Cor
rectional Institute, is
a graduate of Bertie
High School and Roa-
noke-Chowan Commu
nity College in 2017.
“Participating in the
program truly pre
pared me for my career
now,” said Russell.
“Officer Russell is
the result of a program
dedicated to promot
ing professionalism.
He has expressed the
desire to make this
more that a job but a
career by dedicating
himself to outstanding
