Bertie County Sheriff John Holley said officers solved the case within 24 hours and made one arrest, but two people are still on the loose. Three people reportedly broke into a home on Tony’s Lane in Windsor on Sept. 8 and held the elderly hom eowner at gunpoint, while they removed items from the home. Officers with the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office were called and responded. Upon arrival, they contacted Det. Ronald Rascoe, who came to the scene of the crime. The next day, Lt. Matt Roebuck and Det. Rascoe returned to the home and interviewed the victim for a second time. Later in the day, Det. Sgt. Harris Williams and Det. Sgt. Martin Phelps joined them in investigating the crime. “All our investigators worked non-stop to identify the suspects and recover as much of the stolen prop erty as possible,” Sheriff Holley said. “Investigators were able to solve the case within 24 hours of the initial report. Bertie County Sher iff John Holley said of ficers were called to a residence on Cedar Street in Aulander Sept. 12 where they found a female suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was trans ported to Vidant Roa noke Chowan Hospital In Ahoskie and then transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. Sheriff Holley said deputies on scene re quested the assistance of the investigations unit. Lt. Matt Roebuck, Sgt. Harris Williams, Sgt. Martin Phelps and Det. Ronald Rascoe re sponded to the call. As a result of the en suing investigation, the victim’s boyfriend, John Tabborn, was arrested and charged. He was placed under a manda tory 48-hour domestic violence hold. Bertie County Sher iff John Holley said the BCSO Narcotics/Gang Unit and members of the Down East Drug Task Force conducted an investigation at 104 South Hardee Lane in Windsor Sept. 9. Officers, including Lt. Matt Roebuck and Sgt. Initially last week’s forecasted track of Hurricane Florence had much of Bertie County preparing for the worst. Bertie County was projected to experience widespread rainfall totals of six-to-12 inches, with po tential of more, as well as tropical storm force winds, storm surge and inland flooding. Ahead of the storm, Bertie Coun ty Chairman Ernestine Bazemore agreed. “1 was very pleased with the level of prepa ration we saw through out the county,” Coo per said. “Not only did all emergency services - EMS, fire, law enforce ment and emergency management - staff up to handle what we could have gotten, but other entities and indi viduals stepped up to the plate.” Bertie County’s histo ry with hurricanes, go ing all the way back to Hurricane Hazel in 1954, and more recently hur ricanes Dennis, Floyd, Irene and Matthew, has See FLORENCE, 8 seen the county suffer the devastation caused by winds and rain.
