C elebrating 50 years of education.
Nestled in this small community
sits Lawrence Academy-a indepen
dent, regional school that has spent
the last 50 years educating students
from preschool through 12th grade.
In the spring of 1968, an interested group of citi
zens began to explore the possibility of opening a
new school, which could serve students from Ber
tie and Hertford counties.
Under the leadership of people like Godfrey Ter
ry of Lewiston, J.W. Minton of Roxobel, Webster
Daniels of Perrytown and George Burdick of Col
erain, private discussions led to a public meeting
at the Connaritsa Baptist Church.
Later, a meeting was held in Windsor at the home
of Lewis and Crethie White where a board of direc-

driver has been sus
pended after a pre
schooler was left on a
bus at Windsor Elemen
tary School last week.
According to Bertie
County Schools Pub
lic Information Officer
Amanda Bunch, around
noon on Wednesday,
Nov. 14, a school cus
todian went outside
as part of performing
her daily duties and
saw the student stand
ing inside a school bus
that was parked in the
school bus parking lot
located directly next to
the school.
The student had been
on the bus since around
8 a.m.
“This is a very serious
matter. This incident
should have never hap
pened, and we are do
ing a thorough investi
gation,” said Bunch,
The state school
bus driver’s handbook
states that it is the driv
er’s responsibility to
make sure there are no
passengers left on the
bus at the end of each
route.
“This is protocol for
all regular and substi
tute bus drivers, and
must be followed with
out exception,” she
added.
The bus driver has
been suspended until
further notice.
“When the child was
found, she was exam
ined by the school
nurse, and was later re
leased to her parents’
care. We will reinforce
to all transportation
employees that proto
col and all job respon
sibilities must be fol
lowed without fail,” said
Bunch.
