At the Jan. 7 meeting of the board, the commission ers unanimously adopted a motion to secure a 10.35- acre tract on the Albemarle Sound as part of its “Tall Glass of Water” Project. Bertie County initially tried to purchase the prop erty, which is described as a “beach path” in 2016, ac cording to a press release. The attempt failed. At the same time, the com missioners sought grant funding from the N.C. Divi sion of Coastal Management to cover the costs of land ac quisition and improving the beach path access. The 10.35-acre tract con tains freshwater forested wetlands and an estimated 56 percent cleared area. It is approximately 140 feet of waterfront and is accessible by a recorded 60-foot ease ment from Bal-Gra Road. Bertie County Sheriff John Holley confirmed the suspect wanted as an accessory after the fact was taken into custody by the Frank lin (Va.) Police Depart ment. The suspect was Ty- wan Jonshea’ Outlaw, AKA “Too-da-loo,” 28, who was served war rants for Accessory Af ter the Fact of murder. Carter was shot to death at a birthday par ty held at the Midway Community Building. Officers were called and found him shot multiple times. The Bertie County Arts Council collabo rated with the food pantry to host a logo contest for the their first logo. The winners were announced on Dec. 11 at the Bertie County Arts Council’s Christ mas bazaar. The first place winner, Katie Carter, received a $200 gift card as well as her artwork being selected as the new logo. Oniah Brown came in second place with a $100 gift card, and LaShonda Winston came in third place with a $50 gift card. Com missioner Ron Wesson of fered an update on the Teach ing Housing Project which the county and town of Windsor are jointly pursuing. “The only hold up that we have right now is that we need a local amendment be fore the legislature the state legislature that would allow the Windsor Township De velopment Corporation to be the holder of that debt for the housing project,” Wesson said. Wesson said he had spoken with Sen. Erica Smith on the same day of the meeting. A new bill will be ready Jan. 28, with hopes of being in place by Feb. 4. According to Wesson, “Late in the last year it got hung up in committee. We could not get it, or they could not get it out of committee at the end. She tried to get it on the floor in the special session that they just ended, but they agreed not to hear any local bills in that session or very few of them.” In addition, the board re ceived an update from Vidant Bertie Hospital. At the board’s regular monthly meeting last week, Windsor Mayor Jim Hoggard suggested moving forward with three broad points of consideration as the town begins to tackle the flooding issues. The mayor said town officials now have a study from a hydrologist and other information giving the town options to control flooding. The three points ap proved by the town board include upstream improvements, offering properties for flooded businesses and retrofit ting or waterproofing downtown businesses.
