Many wild game hunters and fishermen use it, and some use it just to see a friend or relative. The Sans Souci Ferry, about 12 miles from Windsor at the end of Sans Souci Road, may be what is needed. First known as the Tomlinson Ferry around the 1800s, the two- car ferry connected the Cashie Neck to the fishing community of Sans Souci, which had a post office. Around the time of the Civil War, “the neck” had its own post office, and the official name of Woodard. The N.C. Department of Trans portation has operated and maintained the ferry since the Depression era. Recently, the vessel was out of the river for about one year while receiving an overhaul in Morehead City. A new engine, higher rails, hydraulics and a point job were a few of the $100,000 improvements. A rock and dirt road used to lead the ferry on both sides, but pavement now extends to the public wildlife ramp on the Woodard side. One may argue the life of this edu cator and his family should be taught as its own block of local history. Now 72 years young. Bond still resides in Williamston. He may no longer have to issue grades, but he is defi nitely still teaching. His home is a treasure trove of photos and memorabilia that have matching stories, still fresh in his mind. “I went to Elizabeth City State University,” explained Bond. In this edition “We really need your help,” Bazemore pled with the com missioners. Like many residents, Bazemore said he has to leave vehicles at other locations in or der to get in and out of the sub division due to poor road condi tions.
