Officers with the Bertie Coun ty Sheriff’s Office reacted quick ly to shots being fired into a home on Morning Road Feb. 27 and it led to three arrests. Bertie County Sheriff John Holley said 911 Dispatch re ceived a call shortly after noon last Wednesday reporting indi viduals had fired shots into a home a Morning Road just out side of Windsor. “Our telecommunicators were able to give a description and direction of travel relating to the suspect vehicle,” Sheriff Holley said. “Thanks to that in formation, deputies were able to locate the vehicle swiftly.” Lt. Matt Roebuck and Sgt. Martin Phelps observed a ve hicle matching the description of the suspect automobile near the State Employees Credit Union on U.S. 13/17. The offi cers turned around to follow the vehicle, and it came to a See TRIO, A5 Evans Littlejohn Armstead Aimed robber busted Aulander Police nab suspect THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance AULANDER - Relentless work by the Aulander Police Department com bined with cooperative efforts from two sher iff’s offices led to the arrest of a man wanted for armed robbery last week. Aulander Police Chief Jimmy Barmer said offi cers were patrolling the town when they were called to an armed rob bery at the Food Mart, located at 101 North Commerce St. Aulander Police of ficers Brian Knowles and Travis Askew were the first to arrive on the scene, but the suspect had fled before they ar rived. The officers con tacted Lt. Tom Helms of the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office, and he arrived with K-9 Officer Aries. While the Aulander officers made contact with the Hertford Coun ty Sheriff’s Office, four officers from the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office arrived to set up a pe rimeter in the town. The officers included Sgt. Harris Williams, Cpl. Waging War against bullying Bertie County Schools hosts community event SARAH HDDGES STALLS Bertie Ledger Advance WINDSOR - Poor weather con ditions did not stop the Bertie County Schools community from “Waging the War Against Bullying” on Wednesday, Feb. 20. One young man, (whose name we will not include), sat in the bleachers at Bertie Middle School, waiting for the event to begin. Surrounded by his support team, he was hesitant about attending the event. A member of his support team explained, “I am glad they are having this,” she said. “It is very much needed.” She would go on to explain how the young man had re portedly been the victim of bullying on more occasions than they wanted to recall. “There’s just no sense in it,” she said. The frustration was obvious on the faces of those who care for the student. Windsor Police Chief Justin Jackson said of ficer arrested a Correc tional Officer at Bertie Correctional Institute Feb. 21 after finding contraband. The correctional of ficer was arrested fol lowing an interdiction conducted jointly be tween prison officials and the Windsor Police Department, according to Windsor Police Lt. Frank Ratzlaff. “During the interdic tion, a correction offi cer was attempting to enter the facility while emitting a strong odor of marijuana,” Lt. Rat zlaff said. Demetrius Clark, the Assistant Administra tor at BCI, asked the of ficer if he had any con traband items on his person, and the officer admitted he did and produced the items. The correctional of ficer, identified as Mi chael Algood, produced a large bag of tobacco and marijuana.
