Camille Holmes Rascoe was unanimously chosen to succeed the late Lawrence Carter Jr. as a member of the town board. Carter, a career magistrate, was in his second term on the Windsor Board of Com missioners when he died after a brief illness. He was laid to rest in December. At last week’s meeting of the Windsor Board of Commissioners, the board opened the floor for nomina tions to fulfill Carter’s term from now until a special elec tion is held in November. Mayor Pro-Tempore Cathy Wilson made a motion to appoint Rascoe with Com missioner Randy Walston offering a second. The mo tion passed by a unanimous vote. Windsor Mayor Jim Hog- gard congratulated Rascoe, a regular attendee of board meetings, as did Wilson and Commissioners Walston, Da vid Overton and Randy K. Whitaker. The board decided to re cess their meeting Thurs day to reconvene at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Rascoe will be sworn is to her new post at that time. Following their appoint ment of Rascoe, the board turned to a decision on a See RASCOE, A5 WPD nabs thief THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - A Lewiston Woodville man is be hind bars charged in multiple break-ins in Windsor. Windsor Police Chief Justin Jackson said a suspect in multiple vehicle break-ins was identified through video surveillance. The first reported break-in was Feb. 24 when a homeowner on Pitt Street reported his vehicle had been bur glarized. Money and a firearm were reported stolen from the vehicle. As officers from the Windsor Police Depart ment began investigat ing the break-in, they found three other ve hicles were broken into in the same area, but no items were taken. Chief Jackson said of ficers were able to ob tain video surveillance in the area of the break- ins and identified a sus pect. His identity was then confirmed by a member of law enforce ment. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, could hardly contain her excitement during the dedication celebration. Salmon Creek Hlatural Area dedicated in Bertie County SARAH HODGES STALLS Bertie-Ledger Advance MERRY HILL - Visitors and spe cial guests from across the state made their way to Ber tie County Friday for a special dedication. The Salmon Creek State Natural Area, off the Bal Gra Road, was officially dedicated and turned over to the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation. “This is absolutely thrill ing,” explained Sen. Bob Stein- burg (D-1). “I think it speaks volumes about the good work folks are trying to do to pur sue our history and to tell the tale of North Carolina and American history as well.” The 1,000-acre tract was the scene for intense research and archeological research by The First Colony Founda tion. Artifacts discovered in the area indicate Roanoke colo nists once called the area home. She updated the audience on planning for the May 17 event. Jordan presented sev eral Purple Ribbon Awards to groups who have made an impact on Bertie County’s event during its 25 years. “We can not tell you how much we appreciate the way this county comes together,” Jordan told the commission ers. The Bertie County Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff John Hol ley, Bertie County Rescue and Emergency Management and the Bertie Commission ers received the recogni tion. Bertie County’s 2018 event was number one per capita in the Central and Eastern North Carolina district of the American Cancer Society. Gates County followed next. Perdue Farms was noted as a top team in the East and in the nation, raising $149,099 last year.
