June will make It four years since 1 sug gested right here on these pages that it was in the best inter est of the University of North Carolina to fire Sylvia Hatchell. This was before we heard anything about accusations of racist threats, insensitive directives and poten tially harmful injury suggestions. My rec ommendation in 2015 was largely related to her professional and personal relationship with Jan Boxill, a for mer academic advisor to the women’s bas ketball team who was named more than 100 times in the NCAA’s notice of allegations. It was the same thing the university did to Butch Davis because of his professional and personal relationship with John Blake. 1 later learned the issue with that way of thinking was that Butch Davis was not a beloved Hall of Fame head coach who had guided the uni versity to its program’s first national champi onship before battling and beating cancer be cause that was the per son 1 was suggesting they might be better off getting rid of. Needless to say my opinion was not a pop ular one amongst Tar Heel fans. 1 hope they understand now why it’s best that Hatchell no longer represents the university. I’m not sure where UNC Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham will go from here but as always, 1 have a suggestion. 1 would encourage him and his search committee to take a long look at Elon head coach Char lotte Smith. Smith became forev er etched in my memo ry the day she hit that huge shot to help UNC win the national cham pionship in 1994.
