B2 I APRIL 24,2019 Academia BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Students get free trip to school WINDSOR - Out of ap proximately 150 appli cants statewide, two students from Bertie Middle School were se lected to attend a free, one-week residential program at the North Carolina School of Sci ence and Mathematics this July. Only 50 students in the whole state were chosen to be a part of the “Step Up to STEM program,” which is July 14-19 in Durham. Jahkia Basnight, grade 8, is the daughter of Mashawanda Razor of Windsor. She is an Honor Roll student and a member of the Na tional Junior BETA Club at Bertie Middle School, where she serves as the president. Basnight is also a varsity cheerleader and represented Bertie Middle School as “Miss BMS.” She has been accepted to the Ber tie Early College High School for the 2019-2020 school year. She has also been ac cepted to the Bertie High School Early Col lege for the 2019-2020 school year. “Step Up to STEM” is an innovative, interdis ciplinary academic pro gram that uses exciting real-world subjects to challenge rising 9th graders across North Carolina to build their skills in science, math and communications. During the program’s residential summer in stitute, students live and learn on the histor ic campus of the North Carolina School of Sci ence and Mathemat ics, where they have the opportunity to take advantage of the many unique enrich ment activities avail able throughout the Triangle. This unique summer program, which is be ing made available to our students for free, is .valued at $ 1,495 per stu dent. “Step Up to STEM” provides students with opportunities to en gage with curriculum in ways not typically avail able to them during the standard school year. During the week-long summer program, stu dents will be studying an interdisciplinary sci ence, mathematics, and biomedical engineering curriculum, all of which are supported by a writ ing component. Specifically, the sum mer program will ex plore biological systems and associated cellular processes. A variety of enrichment activities outside of class time further develop stu dents’ social and aca demic learning through on-campus events and off-campus field trips. This is a free one- week residential sum mer program valued at $1495.00. Basnight, and Freeman are among 150 other applicants in vited to be one of the 50 participants in the 2019 Step Up to STEM program. The program will be held July 14-19 at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Dur ham.
