MAY 1,2019 BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE Life & Style The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 ‘Our Town’ debuts this week at Gallery AHOSKIE - The Gallery Theatre, Inc. will close its 53rd season with a production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town. This drama is sponsored by Golden Skillet. Our Town presents life in Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, a small town that could repre sent “An5down, USA.” The play focuses on the lives and loves of next- door neighbors Em ily Webb (Colleen Cur ley) and George Gibbs (Bradley Peacock) and their families, as the play dramatizes their actions and interac tions. Although set in the early 20th century. Our Town echoes emo tions from today. The show is direct ed by Hugh H. Davis and features a diverse, multigenerational cast from throughout the Roanoke-Chowan re gion. The cast includes community members from Bertie, Hertford, TIM FLANAGAN / Contributed Photo Mrs. Webb (Dynecia Downing, right) and Emily {Colleen Curley, left) have a discussion about small town life while rehearsing a scene from Our Town as director Hugh Davis (left) guides them. Gates, and Northamp ton counties, including students from several area schools, includ ing Bertie and Hertford early colleges, Hertford County High School, Riverview Elementary and Ridgecroft School, ranging from Bearfield Primary to Roanoke Chowan Community College. The Gallery stage will be graced by veterans and newcom ers from throughout the region. The cast and crew want Our Town to give back to “their town,” and so the Gallery The atre is sponsoring a canned food drive. All food and donations col lected through the con clusion of this show will be given to the Ahoskie Food Pantry. The performance dates are May 3, 4, 10 and 11. The show be gins at 7:30 p.m. on those days. It will also be per formed at 2:30 p.m. on May 5 and 12. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for Seniors, and $11 for students. Tickets are available at the door and online at www.gallerytheatrea- hoskie.com. Celebrating its 53rd season, the Gallery Theatre is located at 117 West Main Street in Ahoskie. Delta Kappa Gamma sisters meet in Windsor WINDSOR - Thirty Delta Kappa Gamma sisters from Gates, Hertford, Martin, Tyrrell and Washington counties convened on Feb. 9, for a breakfast meeting at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Windsor. The breakfast was a fundraiser for the Bertie County Schools Backpack program. President Kaye Dot- son called the meeting to order. Sue Fairless followed with devotion from 1st Corinthians about love as well as an insightful story about Valentine’s Day in an elementary classroom. A white rose was on display to honor the memory of char ter member Arlene Manning. Pat Nelson shared memories of Ar lene from several per spectives, as Nelson’s husband was a student in Manning’s class and Arlene was a supervi sor when Nelson began teaching. Nelson described her concern for stu dents as well as educa tors. Edith Warren also shared a moving tribute to Manning in which she recalled their 1967 induction into the Nags Head chapter of DKG. Warren also shared how Manning became president of the Beta Upsilon chapter of DKG and only missed meet ings when she was very ill. The sisters enjoyed sharing stories of Man ning, who so strongly represented dedication and commitment to students and teachers. Phyllis Broughton in troduced the speaker, Claire Oceanna, a for mer teacher at Windsor Elementary School and a yoga instructor at the Windsor YMCA. She presented a pro gram called “Love Your self” about the physical and mental benefits of yoga. She even got the members to try several different yoga stretches and poses. In business, charter member Warren is be ing nominated for the Founder’s Award, and member Colby Riggins has been recognized by the state for her supe rior Math 1 scores. Sisters were informed that the chapter donat ed 50 books in the liter acy initiative, and they have been delivered to West Bertie Elementary School near Kelford in Bertie County. Windsor Cancer affects people of all ages, Relay For Life is an opportunity for people, youth included, to make a difference in the fight against cancer by raising funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. Your child'is invited to participate in the Bertie County Relay For Life 2019 Kids Walk to be held at Bertie High School on Friday, May 17,2019. During the Kids Walk, kids are recognized by walking around the track. There will be games and lots of family fun. The Kids Walk is open to children and students. A parent/guardian must be present with him/her at Relay. Each child should register (handwritten form or online), pay a $5 registration fee (for a t-shirt), and try to raise additional money.
