WINDSOR - The second
annual Memorial Day
ceremony will be held
at 11 a.m. Monday, May
27 at the Bertie County
Courthouse.
This year’s event will
feature Col. (Ret.) Brian
S. Davis will serve as
the keynote speaker
for the event. Col. Da
vis currently serves as
Director of the Defense
Personnel and Family
Support Center. In his
role, he leads Defense-
wide efforts to promote
employer support of
the guard and reserve,
the Yellow Ribbon Re
integration Program,
the Transition to Vet
eran Program Office the
Federal Voting Assis
tance Program and the
Computer/Electronic
Accommodations Pro
gram.
Col. Davis retired from
the U.S. Air Force in
Col. (Ret). Brian S. Davis
May of 2016 after serv
ing in several capaci
ties, including as Com
mander of the 507th
Air Refueling Wing at
Tinker Air Force Base
in Oklahoma.
A native of Bertie
County, Col. Davis is
married to his wife, Kel-

the search for a new su
perintendent following
the announcement of
Dr. Catherine Edmonds’
impending departure.
“I would like to thank
the (Bertie County)
Board of Education for
giving me the opportu
nity to serve the stu
dents and families of
Bertie County Schools,”
said Edmonds in a writ
ten statement. “I am
forever grateful for the
parents, leaders, staff,
community members,
and Board members
who came together
to work on behalf of
the students of Bertie
County.”
A statement from Ed
monds was released
after the May 13 vote
by the Elizabeth City-
Pasquotank Board of
Education to hire her
as their new superin
tendent.
“My aim in life, in
all things, is to leave
others better off than
when I met them,” said
Edmonds. “It is my firm
belief that 1 have done
so here in Bertie Coun
ty Schools. I will truly
miss the students, my
colleagues, all the staff
and this entire commu
nity.”
According to Bertie
County Schools, Ed
monds will work with
district administrators
in order to ease the
transition that is to
come for Bertie County
students and staff. In
the meantime, she will
continue to diligently
serve the students of
Bertie County to finish

past week.
The 26th annual Bertie Coun
ty Relay for Life was held Fri
day, May 17 at Roy L. Bond Sta
dium.
Survivors, caregivers, and
supporters gathered for a night
of remembrance, celebration
and entertainment.
The event’s entertainment
began at 5 p.m. with music from
B&E DJ Services, and a presen
tation from the Bertie High
School drum line at 5:30 p.m.
“Let’s Get Ready to Relay”
kicked off with opening cere
monies at 6 p.m. Bertie County
Board of Education Vice-Chair
man Norman Cherry served as
the Master of Ceremonies.
The Bertie High School JROTC
presented the Colors while Ber
tie Early College High School
student Christopher Pierce per
formed the National Anthem.
