County Manager Scott Sauer has announced the appointment of Juan Vaughan II to the position. He will begin his official duties on Monday, June 24. “We are very excited to have Mr. Vaughan join our leadership and pro vide added strength to our management team,” said Sauer. According to Sauer, almost 19 months ago, the Bertie County Board of Commissioners sug gested during a plan ning session that Bertie County needed to build its internal management capacity in order to sus tain the growing volume of projects. Since Hurricane Mat thew hit Bertie County and the Town of Wind sor in October 2016, much of the county’s administrative focus has been on recovery work and coordination for efforts related to state and federal funds to assist citizens im pacted by the devastat ing floodwaters. “At the same time county staff are admin istrating grant funds to replace critical county facilities damaged by the flooding,” said Sau er. “Bertie County has worked very hard to replace EMS Station One with a newly con structed building on County Farm Road which opened Feb. 1. In addition, to EMS Station One’s construction our county staff has juggled multiple projects and have been balancing our efforts to work on the Blue Jay Recreation Center and security improvements at the courthouse,” added Chairman John Trent. And Monday, a crowd gath ered at the Bertie County Courthouse to pay respect to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the nation’s freedom. For the second consecutive year, the Bertie Ledger-Advance and Windsor/ Bertie Chamber of Commerce came together with the town of Windsor and Bertie County to host a Memorial Day Ceremony. The event began at 11 a.m., and was attended by veterans, those who lost loved ones in service and members of the public in general. Lewis Hoggard, Executive Direc tor of the Windsor/Bertie Chamber of Commerce, welcomed those in at tendance, said thank you to the ser vicemen and women in the group, and paid tribute to those who gave their lives for freedom. Davis with a county lapel pin. $1.8M grant given Roanoke Electric awarded LESLIE BEACHBOARD Bertie Ledger-Advance AHOSKIE - North Caro lina Governor Roy Coo per has awarded a $1.8 million grant to Roanoke Electric Co-op, provid ing it an opportunity to extend the reach of its broadband initiative to underserved areas in the co-op’s service ter ritory. In his May 8 announce ment, the governor un veiled his plan to offer $10 million in grants to expand internet access to 19 rural counties in North Carolina. The major funding boost is part of the Growing Rural Econo mies with Access to Technology (GREAT) program, which pro vides matching grants to internet service providers and electric membership coopera tives who compete for funding to lower finan cial barriers, prevent ing broadband internet service expansion in the state’s most eco nomically distressed counties. The co-op’s Roa noke Connect program will receive a total of $1,867,547. The funds will be allocated among the counties in its ser vice territory includ ing $641,978 for Bertie County, $327,010 for Gates County, $376,893 for Hertford County and $521,667 for Northamp ton County. The Roanoke Connect initiative serves the dual purpose for providing co-op member-owners with broadband inter net access to enable the use of energy-saving technologies, while also enhancing system reli ability and operational efficiencies. “Our goal has always been to extend ad vanced technologies to our member-owners. The funds received from the GREAT grants program will allow us to expand the fiber back bone further than origi nally budgeted. In turn.
