Antonio “Tony” Hoggard has been named the new principal of Bertie High School. He is a native of Pow- ellsville. Hoggard has a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Rela tions from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and a Master’s degree in Administration and Supervi sion from the University of Phoenix. He has over 27 years of experience, mostly in Bertie County, serving as principal, assistant principal and di rector positions. According to Hoggard, his two priorities as the princi pal of Bertie High School are teaching and learning, and climate and culture. “1 know the kids. 1 know the culture and climate, and 1 know this community. 1 know what makes this school tick. 1 have a combined 24 years of experience in this build ing, having served as dean of students, an assistant prin cipal and now as principal,” said Hoggard. Bridgette Carson has been named the new principal of Bertie Middle School. She comes from Craven County Schools. Carson has a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Elizabeth City State Uni versity, a Master’s degree in English Education from Indi ana University of Pennsylva nia and a Master’s degree in School Administration from Fayetteville State University. Hailey Barnes of Aul ander was awarded the Golden LEADF Scholar ship to assist with earn ing her degree at East Carolina University in Greenville. Barnes, a 2019 gradu ate of Bertie Early Col lege High School, and other awardees will receive $3,000 per year for four years as they attend participating North Carolina colleges or universities. Bertie County’s Co operative Extension’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) re ceived a grant.
