Wildlife work in partnership THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - Two attempts. Two failures. The Windsor Police De partment and N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission thwarted two attempts to smuggle contraband into Bertie Correctional Institute this past weekend. “The officers of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commis sion are excellent partners,” Windsor Police Chief Justin Jackson said. “When patrol ling their grounds, their of ficer are always vigilant and contact us when they see something that doesn’t seem right.” The first incident of the weekend occurred at ap proximately 3:30 p.m. Friday when officers from N.C. Wild life Master Officer James Strider contacted the Wind sor Police Department. Cpl. Blake Mizelle of the WPD arrived and found a male walking on the road leading to the prison. The person stopped and put items down near, the woods line and then returned to the roadway, where Cpl. Mizelle stopped to talk to him. As he was talking to the in dividual, Cpl. Visitor spending in Bertie Co. increases by 4.6 percent THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance Domestic visitors to Bertie County spent more than $14.6 million in 2018. It was an in crease of 4.6 percent over the previous year. The information was includ ed in an annual study commis sioned by Visit North Carolina. The study highlights tourism spending in-each of North Caro lina’s 100 counties. Statewide visitors spent $1.3 billion in North Carolina, which was an increase of 4.7 percent over 2018. It equates to $69 mil lion per day. In Bertie County, there are a variety of tourist destinations including The Hope Plantation, Scotch Hall Preserve, the Cashie Treehouse Village and three museums located in downtown Windsor. Earlier this summer, the Bertie County Cooperative Extension Director Billy Barrow introduced Elizabeth Baker as the county’s new Family and Consumer Sci ence Director. Baker took the position as FCS Director for Bertie and Martin counties On June 3. “She is glad to be here,” said Barrow. Baker is a northeastern North Carolina native and is familiar with the area and families she will be working with. Baker has a Bachelor Degree of Science in Community Health Education, an Associate Degree in General Education and an ex tensive amount of practical, real world business experience. “She has developed many per sonal skills including the ability to work effectively with people at all levels and from all works of life,” said Bertie County Coop erative Extension Administrative Assistant Shelia Powell.
