A2 I OCTOBER 2,2019 Community BERTIE LEDGER-ADVANCE The fabric of Bertie County since 1832 Obituaries Donnie Spivey WINDSOR - Donnie Spivey 75, of South King Street, died Wednesday September 25, 2019 at his home. He was bom in Norfolk VA to the late Way- land and Effie Miller Spivey and predeceased by a sister, Helen Brown; brothers, Kenneth, Gary, Jes se and Ronnie Spivey and a special nephew, Joey Harrison. Donnie was a member of Green Cross Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday school superintendent. He was very active in pris on ministry and loved coaching Little League Base ball, Donnie retired as a city letter carrier with the US Postal Service and was an Army veteran of Viet nam. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kathy Con ner Spivey; daughter, Dormette Spivey Bames of Windsor; sister, Cheryl Williams of Rocky Mount; very special nieces and nephews, Courtney Castel- loe, Logan MizeU and Sarah Harrison. A memorial service is planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Amedisys Hospice, 201 E. Water Street, Plymouth, NC 27962. Bom May 20, 1928 in Ber tie County, NC she was the daughter of James A. and Millie H. Speight and the sister of Thom as S. Speight. Mrs. Walker gradu ated from East Caroli na Teacher’s College in 1948 with a B. S. in Ed ucation. She worked as a teacher in the Burl ington City Schools for many years, teaching at Fisher Street, Maple Av enue, Elmira, and Grove Park elementary schools. After her retirement from public school teaching, Mrs. Walker served as the first Administrator of Burlington Christian Academy. She was actively in volved as a teacher of the BYKOTA Sunday School class at Grove Park Baptist Church. Mrs. Walker was married to Gordon Walker, who predeceased her in 2004. She' is survived by her daughter Cathy Johnson and husband Rob, her son Rex Walker and wife Stefanie, and her grand children Bob Johnson, jyier Johnson, Robin Walk er Amitz, and Stephen Walker. She also is survived by eight great-grandchildren and by her first cous in Tom Speight, her niece Nedgelena Spei^t Jen nings, and her nephew Thomas S. Speight, Jr. Mary Walker is remembered as a remarkable teacher with the gifts of conveying to others her genuine concern for them, and for motivating her students to believe in themselves while inspiring them to do their best. She loved her family, her church, her art, and Duke basketball. Her fami ly is deeply grateful to Red Braxton and the staff of Home Listead Seiuor Care, who enabled Mrs. Walker to live in her home and remain active until shortly before her passing. A Memorial Service for Mrs. Walker will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 28 at Grove Park Baptist Church. A reception with the family will take place ifnmediately after the service. The family will be at the home of Cathy and Rob John son at other times. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the general funds of Grove Park Baptist Church ( 108 Tran One, Burlington, NC 27215) or Republican Baptist Church ( 1422 Republican Road, Windsor, NC 27983).
