Two arrested in Sunday shooting

WINDSOR - An early-morn
ing shooting has led to the
arrest of two.
Windsor Police Lt. Frank
Ratzlaff said officers re
sponded to 106 Belmont St.
in the early hours of Sunday
following reports of a person
being shot.
“Cpl. Blake Mizelle re
sponded to the scene and
was not able to locate a vic
tim, but did locate the crime
scene,” Lt. Ratzlaff said.
Police officers were in
formed the victim had been
taken to Vidant Bertie Hos
pital by way of a personal
vehicle.
Lt. Ratzlaff went to the hos
pital where he was informed
the victim was shot five
times and was being airlifted
to Vidant Medical Center in
Greenville.
In addition to Cpl. Mizelle,
other officers joined the in
vestigation including Wind
sor Police Chief Justin Jack-
son, Sgt. Jason Thomas and
Cpl. Chris Leggett. The N.C.
State Bureau of Investigation
was also called in to assist.
Through investigation, two
suspects were identified by
the Windsor Police Depart
ment. They were 31-year-
old Antonio Bond and Earl
Bunch.
Bond was located by Ber
tie County Sheriff’s Office
Sgt. Martin Phelps and taken
into custody Monday. He
was charged with accessory
after the fact to attempted
murder and confined to the
Bertie-Martin Regional Jail
under a $100,000 secured
bond.

week.
According to North
Carolina Department of
Public Safety Commu
nications Officer Jerry
Higgins, the assault
occurred at 1:15 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 25 when
the offender pulled a
“shank” and stabbed
the sergeant, a 17-year
veteran employee.
The prison was placed
on lockdown.
Both the sergeant and.
the inmate were taken
for outside medical at
tention, treated and
released within three
hours.

lent temperatures made it a
beautiful day for a race.
The 10th annual Bertie Spook
tacular was a complete suc
cess.
The annual event brings
runners from all over to Ber
tie County, which helps raise
funds for the Good Shepherd
Food Pantry.
“We couldn’t have asked for
more enthusiasm from the par
ticipants. We appreciate all of
the support from the communi
ty,” said Spooktacular commit
tee member Michelle Leicester.
Runners could pre-register
for the event, and attendants
were available at 8 a.m. the
morning of the race to sign up
last-minute runners.
According to Leicester, ap
proximately 30 runners signed
up the morning of the run.
The opening ceremony began
at 8:50 a.m. with Windsor/Ber
tie Chamber of Commerce Di
rector Lewis Hoggard welcom
ing the runners, vendors and
spectators.
Windsor Mayor Pro Tempore
Cathy Wilson welcomed all of
the runners to Windsor.
The Bertie High School JROTC
presented colors while Charles
Smith performed the National
Anthem. The Good Shepherd
