Smuggling illegal con traband into Bertie Cor rectional Institute (BCO isn’t as easy as one might think. Windsor Police Lt. Frank Ratzlaff said of ficers arrested David Ronald Black Jr. Satur day and charged him with attempting to smuggle contraband into BCl. Black becomes one of a laundry list of suspects arrested by the Windsor Police De partment while trying to smuggle contraband over the fence of BCI. Windsor Police Offi cer Jessie Mizelle was called to Bertie Cor rectional after officers from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commis sion reported a suspect Vearing all black walk ing along the woods line near the prison. Officer Mizelle re sponded and went into the woods looking for the suspect. When he saw Black walking through the woods, the suspect dropped two containers of con traband and ran away from Officer Mizelle. During the chase, Black dropped a bottle of con traband as well. Ground broken at Tri-County Airport ARC: Type 0 AULANDER - This past week, a ground-breaking ceremony was held at Tri-County Airport for a new general aviation terminal. The terminal is being built by Calvin Davenport Construction from Rocky Mount and should be completed by December 2020. This $1.4 million project is funded by state and federal funds with no local matches from any of the three counties (Bertie, Herford and Northamp ton) who operate the airport. The federal funds come from the Airport Airway and Trust fund administered by the Fed eral Aviation Administration (TAA). The AATF fund mon ies come from excise taxes on the transportation of persons, property and on aviation fuel. The purpose of the AATF is to provide funding for capital im provements to the United States airport and airways system. The architects for the proj ect are the Wilson Group from Charlotte, who have done air port terminals in Wilmington, Wilson, Lumberton, Concord and hangars and other build ings at Charlotte Douglas Inter national Airport. See AIRPORT, 5 blood sought WWII Veterans meet THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance Urgent help is need- Officials ®blood with the A m e r i - can Red Cross are extending an urgent call for donors of all blood especially types, but those with Type O “With influenza es calating across the country and preventing some donors from giv ing, and winter weather threatening to cancel blood drives, the Red Cross now has a criti cal shortage of Type 0 blood and urgently needs donors to re stock the shelves,” said Bernadette Jay, a spokesperson for ARC. According to officials, the Red Cross currently has just a three-day sup ply of Type 0 available for patient emergencies and medical treatment. The Plymouth Police De partment reported a woman had been stopped by some one allegedly impersonating a law enforcement officer in the early morning hours of Jan. 14. The suspect allegedly re turned to his car and drove off when the victim request ed identification. Windsor Police Chief Jus tin Jackson, Aulander Police Chief Jimmy Barmer and Bertie County Sheriff John Holley are encouraging citi zens to look for key signs of a legitimate officers pulling them over. “By and large, officers who pull over cars in Bertie County will be in uniform, and should be easily identi fied,” Chief Barmer said. “If you cannot identify the of ficer by their uniform, it is perfectly acceptable to ask what department they work for.” Chief Jackson said even those not in uniform will have his or her badge clearly visible.
