Primary election day
is at hand.
On Tuesday morn
ing voters can make
their way to the polls
throughout Bertie
County as they choose
party nominees for lo
cal, state and federal
elections.
Polls open at 6:30
a.m. Tuesday morning
and remain open until
7:30 p.m.
Due to court chal
lenges, the Voter ID law
will not be in affect for
the May primary.
There will be ballots
for all five major par
ties - Democrat, Re
publican, Libertarian,
Constitution Party and
Green Party - as well as
an unaffiliated ballot.

food for residents in
Bertie County who are
less fortunate.

The snowfall in Bertie
County gave students
and some adults a good
old-fashioned snow day
Friday.
Thanks to the ground
being relatively warm,
the snowfall came and
went without a lot of is
sues last week.

Chamber hosts annual Black History program
WINDSDR - The Windsor/
Bertie Chamber of Com
merce held the 12th Annu
al Black History dinner at
Cashie Convention Center
on Feb. 18.
The theme of the event
was “Hands to a Larger
Service,” which was high
lighted by the award of
plaques to seven deserv
ing honorees.
Dr. Otis Smallwood, Al
ice Ballance, James Pugh,
Sheldon Rhines, Joyce
Mourning Mitchell, Vernell
and Cynthia Rodgers were
all honored for the work
that they have done in the
community over their re
spective lifetimes. Mitchell
died in June of this past
year and her award was
accepted by her sister, Val
erie Freeman.
Claudis Polk delivered
the keynote address with
a message tailored to the
young people in the audi
ence. “Don’t be afraid to
fail, but if you do fail, know
that you gave your best ef
fort and fall forward,” Polk
said.
Polk gave examples of
his own life where he had
dropped out of college, but
returned later in life for
an undergraduate degree,
masters degree and is cur
rently finishing his doctor
al degree.
Polk currently is em
ployed by the UNC School
of Medicine as the director
of scholastic enrichment
and equity. His involve
ment in Bertie County has
come from working with
Vivian Saunders at the Hive
in Lewiston Woodville.
Serving as the mistress
of ceremonies, Reba Green-
Holley kept the program
moving right along. Green-
