This increase result ed in Bertie County’s status to be changed from orange to red on the COVlD-19 County Alert System. But it is not just Ber tie County, the num bers are increasing across the state and the country. At press time, the latest COV- lD-19 update from Albe marle Regional Health Services shows a major increase for cases in Bertie County. There are currently 905 total lab confirmed cases, 85 active lab con firmed cases, 795 re covered lab confirmed cases and 25 deaths. This is an increase of 100 lab confirmed cas es and 3 deaths in just over a week. North Carolina Gov ernor Roy Cooper held a press conference Tuesday afternoon to discuss the increase in statewide cases and the future of a COVlD-19 vaccine. Each year people from all walks of life gather at Edgewood Cemetery with one common goal- to remember and honor those who have served or are serving our country. This year, the Wreaths Across America will be held at noon on Saturday, Dec. 19. The local coordinators for this year’s event is Len Joyner and Helen Lassiter. The Hoggard Christmas Wonderland of Lights that brighten the night sky have become a drive-thru tradition for families near and far. Just one day after celebrating a time of thanks, the opportunity officially to begin the holiday season arrives in Windsor. That’s the day Herman and Therman Hog gard turn on more than 500,000 Christmas lights- something locals and those from a far look forward to each year. The display - which is located just off of King Street on Dalton Drive - has been a holiday fa vorite for 25 seasons, and draws crowds from all over the world. “We add a new piece to the decorations ev ery day throughout the season. COVID-19 prevented a physical community gather ing so the committee decid- In this edition — ed to turn to a virtual race instead. Participants were allowed to run/walk within a 2 week period, Oct. 17 until Oct. 31. The normal course starts on York Street behind Wind sor Town Hall near the util ity building and finishes in front of Livermon Park and Mini Zoo. The course for both the 5K and the 1-Mile Fun Run/ Walk were marked but, due to there not being a physi cal event, runners and walk ers could participate from anywhere, including from a treadmill after signing up on www.runtheeast.com. Medals and t-shirts will still be mailed in the next week but monetary prizes were not awarded this year. The runner or walkers time was recorded with the mobile phone application called RaceJoy or partici pants also had the option to manually upload it on www. runtheeast.com. Jonathan Huddleston of Windsor was the fastest to finish in the overall race. His time was 22:21. Cadmus Capehart of Wash ington came in second. His time was 24:04. Third place was taken by Dominic Reisig of Washing ton.
