WINDSOR - Two men have
been charged in connection
with a rash of break-ins in
the western portion of Bertie
County.
Bertie County Sheriff John
Holley said information was
provided and warrants in or
der to charge Jalik Lassiter
and Shykwan Hawkins in the
crimes. The information was
presented by Det. Brandon
Ingram.
One of those suspects -
Hawkins - is still on the lam
and is being sought by mul
tiple agencies.
“I know when someone’s
house is broken into, they
want arrests made the next
day. So do 1,” Sheriff Holley
said. “Unfortunately, when
we do things quickly it can
lead to criminals walking out
of court free. We have to
take our time, dot every i and
cross every t and that’s what
we’re trying to do in this situ
ation.”

due to some towns be

CSIRO is Australia’s na

innovation catalyst. Ellis vol
unteered to lead a segment
of workshops offered at the
Bertie County YMCA. During
Camp Happy, kids attending
this summer
camp were
challenged
to consider
how a ve

might dif

hides used
on earth.
“I did this for two years in
a row, 2018 and 2019. Over a
few weeks, 1 volunteered to
deliver a STEM activity for a
few hours on one day during
the camp where the kids built
a Mars Rover and the follow
ing year at the next summer
camp, the camp participants
built Lunar Landers,” Ellis
said.
Unfortunately, the arrival
of the pandemic, curbed El
lis’ volunteer segments at the
Bertie County YMCA. The ex
perience she gained in past
years will continue to make
her knowledge relevant for fu
ture volunteer segments.
