Kelford man injured by stray bullet
Aulander man charged with assault with a deadly weapon

KELFORD - A man who heard
a disturbance outside his
home Thursday evening,
ended up at Vidant Medi
cal Center with a gunshot
wound.
Bertie County Sheriff John
Holley said the man was in
side his home when what
amounted to a shootout was
taking place outside. An ar
rest has been made in the
shooting.
“The man heard the com
motion outside and went to
the door to see what was go
ing on,” Sheriff Holley said.
“When he did, he was shot
in the abdomen by a random
bullet.”
The victim was seriously
injured and two deputies
- Cpl. Roger Blount and
Deputy William Padgette -
provided Cardiopulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR) until
Bertie EMS arrived and took
over the man’s care. He was
flown to Vidant Medical Cen
ter from West Bertie Elemen
tary School, which was near
the incident.
Sheriff Holley said the vic
tim is recovering after hours
of surgery.

Board of Elections will
host filing for the towns
of Askewville, Aulander,
Colerain, Kelford, Pow
ellsville, Roxobel and
Windsor from noon on
Friday, July 2 through
noon on Friday, July 16.
The filing period for
the town of Lewiston
Woodville is set for
noon on Friday, July 26
through noon on Fri
day, Aug. 13 because
the candidates are
elected by district.
Candidates will have
to file a Notice of Can
didacy and pay a filing
fee at the Bertie Coun
ty Board of Elections.
Candidates must be 21
years of age and live
and be registered to
vote in the municipal
ity or the district within
the municipality.

the ribbon cutting ceremony
for the new Bertie County Li
brary and Cooperative Exten
sion building on Wednesday,
June 16.
“1 am honored to see all of
you here today. I am honored
to inform you if your goal was
to come to the best county in
North Carolina, you did it,” said
Bertie County Manager Juan
Vaughan II.” “If your goal was
to be among some of the finest
county and municipal officials
and staff, you did it. If your goal
was to have some of the best
peanuts around, you did it.”
Vaughan welcomed everyone
who was in attendance to show
appreciation for those who
took part in making the facility
possible.

Ron Wesson led the invocation.
In his prayer. Wesson spoke
about his mother being a li
brarian in Bertie County for 42
years, and to think he (her son)
had something to do with the
project was a blessing and an
honor.

House is back open for tours.
New hours and tour sched
ules went into effect June 1
for the Hope Mansion, King-
Bazemore House and exhib
its housed in the Roanoke
Chowan Heritage Center.
Tours will be offered at
10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.
on Mondays, Wednesdays,
Fridays, Saturdays and Sun
days. Tours may by sched
uled on Tuesdays or Thurs
days by appointment only.
The tours last approximate
ly 90 minutes.
Spinning and weaving
demonstrations, along with
garden tours are also avail
able from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on
Saturdays.
Demonstrations are in
cluded in the price of tour
tickets. Garden tour prices
are available in the Roanoke
Chowan Heritage Center.
Demonstrations show how
cloth was made from a plant
into a blanket.
