Elections Board reappoints all members of local group BY THADD WHITE Group Editor RALEIGH - Four people, all returning, have been appointed to the Bertie County Board of Elec tions. The N.C. State Board of Elections met Tues day to appoint four members to all 100 count boards of elec tions. In Bertie County, the two current Republi can members were re appointed for another term. They are Timo thy Davis and Michael Fields. In addition, current Democrats James Lee and Anthony Ward were reappointed by the state board. “We are happy to wel come new members to North Carolina’s elec tions team,” said Karen Brinson Bell, executive director of the State Board. “Together, we will continue to ensure that Our elections are accessible, safe and se cure, and that every eli gible vote counts.” Every two years, state statute requires the State Board to appoint four members - two See APPOINTED, 3 LESLIE BEACHBOARD / Bertie Ledger-Advance The skies about Windsor were lit with fireworks on Saturday, July 3 as the county celebrated Independence Day. Freedom Celebration Windsor, Chamber host firework event LESLIE BEACHBOARD Managing Editor WINDSOR - Independence Day was celebrated red, white and Bertie style. Fireworks lit up the sky over the Cashie River and the town of Windsor Saturday night, celebrating America’s Independence. The Freedom Fireworks were held Saturday, July 3 at the Roanoke Cashie River Center after being resched uled from the day before due to the possibility of inclem ent weather. The gates opened at 4:30 p.m. for spectators, with vendors, entertainment and more. It was a beautiful sunny evening without a raincloud in sight. A slight breeze made it cooler than a typical hot July evening for the specta tors arriving to find the best seat for the show. “It was a fantastic evening. Three people - all current or prospective leaders in Windsor - filed for election soon after it opened at noon Friday. Lewis W. Hoggard, who serves as Execu tive Director of the Windsor/Bertie Cham ber of Commerce filed for mayor of the town of Windsor. In addition, incum bent Commissioner Randy K. Whitaker filed for a second term. New comer David Bunch filed as well. There are currently two seats - those held by Whitaker and retir ing Windsor Commis sioner David Overton - that will be on the bal lot. No one filed for of fice in any other Bertie County town. New name, same excellent event planned for October MICHELLE LEICESTER Bertie Ledger-Advance WINDSOR - The Spooktacu- lar 5K has a new name. The annual 5K race will now be called Bertie Spec tacular 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run. The name was brought to the committee’s attention that the original name was being interpreted in a nega tive way by part of the com munity. The committee released a statement. “The term was only used for identifying our event which was held at or near Halloween,” it reads. “We ap preciate their honesty and forthrightness concerning this and to that end, we are changing the name of the event to avoid any belief that we condone its use in any negative way. Our intention has been and always will be to provide financial support for the mission of the Good Shepherd Food Pantry.” The 5K , 1 Mile Fun Run and Jamboree was orga nized in 2010 to address the problem of hunger in Bertie County by raising funds for The Good Shepherd Food Pantry.
