Man shot to death near Buena Vista

ty man was found shot to
death on Briarcliff Lane near
here Monday night.
Bertie County Sheriff
John Holley said his office
received a call Monday eve
ning at approximately 9 p.m.
The caller said shots had
been fired and that one man
may have been injured.
“Dispatchers immediately
sent deputies and EMS per
sonnel,” Sheriff Holley said.
“When they arrived, a gentle
man was found deceased.”
The man was identified
as James Earl Clark Jr., 34,
who was a resident of Bertie
County.
Sheriff Holley said Maj.
Matt Roebuck led the inves
tigation Monday night and
will continue to oversee it.

have shot the victim.
“We are currently inves
tigating to determine if this
was self-defense or a homi
cide,” Sheriff Holley said.
“There were witnesses of
some of the events leading
up to the shooting and we
are talking with a number of
people.”

Mayor James Pugh has
withdrawn his candida
cy for re-election.
Pugh, who filed July
26, withdrew late last
week and his name will
not appear on the bal
lot.
That leaves only one
person on the ballot for
the three seats avail
able in the November
election.
Lee Owens has filed
for the Woodville Dis
trict seat on the Lew
iston Woodville Board
of Commissioners. In
cumbent June Jernigan
hasn’t filed for the seat.
The Lewiston District
Commissioner DiAnne
Bazemore has also not
filed to date.
Filing for the Lewis
ton Woodville seats will
continue through noon
on Friday.

WINDSOR - People and vendors filled a por
tion of Granville Street in downtown Windsor
Sunday to help support a local organization.
The Bertie Alumni Community Association,
along with the Windsor/Bertie Chamber of
Commerce, hosted a Seafood & Music Street
Festival Aug. 8. The event was originally
scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 7, but with a high
possibility of rain the event was rescheduled
to the next day.
Association President Jackie Lyons White
met with Windsor Town Administrator Allen
Castelloe and the Windsor/Bertie Chamber of
Commerce Executive Director Lewis Hoggard
and decided to reschedule the event until the
rain date.

ommends everyone,
whether vaccinated on
unvaccinated, wear a
mask while indoors to
maximize protection
from the Delta variant,
and prevent possibly
spreading it to others.
