Pugh-Stevenson earns career readiness honor AHOSKIE - Ja’queta Pugh-Stevenson, Coor dinator of Human Re sources Development and Career Readiness Certificate Program at Roanoke Chowan Community College has received instructor certification in the soft skills employment pro gram called Working Smart. “We are proud of Ms. Stevenson and her accomplishment in achieving this certi fication,” said Wendy Vann, Vice President for External Affairs and Executive Director of the Foundation. “This certification will allow our college to offer the excellent soft skills employment program ‘Working Smart’ for the Roanoke-Chowan area.” “Employers are look ing for people who not only have the technical skills and experience to do the job, but also bring the ‘soft skills’ that lead to success,” according to Steven son, who also serves as the NCWorks Hertford County Liaison. “1 look forward to offering the ‘Working Smart’ program to pro vide the tools to help employees keep a job, excel at your job, and be more productive,” said the coordinator. The ‘Working Smart’ training includes mod ules on self-awareness, self-management, work ethics, communication skills, and problem solving skills. All class es are free of charge for job seekers or employ ees currently in the workplace. Working Smart: Soft Skills for Workplace Success was developed by the Charlotte Meck lenburg Workforce Development Partner ship. Certification re quires 24 hours of fa cilitation training and demonstration of all competencies required for instruction. Armstead to lead RCCC Small Business Center AHOSKIE - Roanoke-. Chowan Community College has announced Derrick Armstead is the new director of the Small Business Center, which is located on the college’s campus in the Freeland Building. The Roanoke-Chow an Community College Small Business Center (SBC) provides small business owners with information they need for success, including advice on marketing, sales, bookkeeping, and management. “We are delighted to welcome Mr. Armstead to the role of director of our Small Business Center,” said Wendy Vann, vice president for external affairs and ex ecutive director of the foundation. “He brings much experience to this position and as director will provide consultation services to small businesses on a wide range of topics.” Armstead received a bachelor of arts degree in English from North Carolina Central Uni versity and attended Massachusetts School Derrick Armstead of Law. His experience in cludes many years as an employment con sultant with NCWorks Career Center in Green ville, as well as other positions in social services and as a legal compliance officer. While employed with the NCWorks Career Center, he was award ed the 2018 American Veterans (AMVETS) Na tional “Veteran Friendly Employer of the Year” award regarding his collaboration with North Carolina busi nesses seeking to hire and retain military vet erans. He is a member of the National Career Devel opment Association (NCDA) and the Nation al Association of Work force Development Pro fessionals (NAWDP). His certifications in clude Global Career Development Facilita tor and Certified Career Services Professional.
