School Kill Again Quiet
Now that basketball season is
over, everything is quiet over on
school hill and everybody is try
ing to get some advantage in their
work before spring fever sets in.
The girls' basketball team this
year needs no apology, losing only
two games m North Carolina out
of the eight played. It was hard
luck that it was impossible for
Franklin to enter the Cullowhee
tournament. Better luck next time
there is a girls' team as good as
the present one. . v
t The boys' team had tough sail
ing all along, only winning five
games durin the season. However
there is no alibi or a necessity for
one as the kids . were willing and
tried hard but the weight, speed,
height and experience was most
always against them. When they
found opponents any way near
their equal it was a gdod battle.
As a hard-working willing bunch
of cheerful youngsters they were a
great success. Our season as a
winning season was also poor, but
along the financial lines it was
more of a success.. The team and
coach wish to thank each and
every one of those who came to
se the games. May the teams be
better, the support better and the
people of Macon county love and
take interest in the Franklin high
school.

Story of Crawford
Dairy ,
The following story about Gilmer
Crawford's dairy, one of the most
modern in Western North Caro
lina, appeared on the Farm Page
in Monday's issue of The Ashe
ville Citizen:
The MeadowLand " Farm dairy
owned and operated by Gilmer
Crawford one mile west of here is
an example of how modern meth
ods pay in this industry. Mr.
Crawford is the only son of the
late Lee Crawford, at one time
president of the Macon county
bank, (Bank of Franklin).
A her,d of twenty milkers, Guern
sey and Holsteins, may be seen
feeding in a rolling meadow sur
rounded on all sides by forest cov
ered mountains and the long level
of the meadow cut through by
three clear brooks from gushing
springs at the foot of these moun
tains. The dairy . was built by state
specifications, inspected and ap
proved by state inspectorT
There are three square feet of
light to each stanchion, and 500
cubic feet of air. Automatic djink
ing cup of pure mountain water to
each stanchion. The milking barn
with concrete floor is-scoured after
each milking. The walk way, bot
tling room, milking barn all have
concrete floors and are screened.
Milked By Machinery
The cows are'milkcd1 with a milk
ing machine. The milk is first
filtered, then cooled, bottled and
capped, all by sanitary machinery
and delivered in an ice cooled,
compartment.
Each cow has been inspected for
Each helper has a

Product; from the dairy arc:
Who'll milk, skimmed milk, cream,
Mii.ir-f lIu'cso, chocul.ile milk and
IhhUt milk.
The holds and eating pl.ices of
Franklin serve this grade "A" milk,
otherwise they do not gel a grade
. rating by the state.
Raises His Feed
All dairy feed, except cottonseed
meal and bran, are raised on the
Meadow Land farm
Crops ajr.iat;Lted, early rye, giv
ing place for corn and other r.ough
ness Each cow's recurd is kepi anl
she is fed according to the amount
of milk and butter fat she pro
duces. These improvements have all been
made for grade A milk within the
last twelve months and Macon
county is, indeed proud of its first
clean dairy situated on the lovely
old Crawford farm. "
