V ork on HisKway 23 To Jackson County Wo;k was begun last Wednes day on tht stretch of Highway 28 from Highlands to the Jack son county " line. A crew of about. 25 state highway workers are busy laying on the final coat of tar known as . "scaling wax." They began at the Jackson coun ty line at. Sunrise' View and are gradually working toward High lands, surfacing about a mile a day. One tar jmachine is, being used and a fleet of trucks to put .the necessary . grstvelon. Twenty-eight, " leading "out" of Highlands, is, of course, closed at . the time of writing due tp this worijt, but will be open again next week, Hand-made Slio Mr. Speed's Last Makes Them to Last Sunday was a record-smashing day - in . Wighlands oeorge. Weely broke the record for the number of car wrecks one may safely have m one, day and Lewis Rice broke his two-year 'record for no car ac cidents of any kind. Mr. Neely Accident Number One occurred "when his car an( one driven by 4ome Qemson Col- ege students collided "on the Tri- State road near the' Salinas orch ard. Unfortunately, -Mrs. George Neely- was miured and it was de cided to take her to Franklin, so when Mr. Wiley McCall's car came along, Mr. and. Mrs, Neely started to Highlands with him; Mr. Neely's bad hick Jinx was still stalking him however, and another car, driver unknown," bumped into the rear end of the car in which he was riding, making Accident Num ber Two. This was minor compared to Ac cident Number Three, whichoccur red when the car in which George Neely was riding behind the car bearing . Mrs, Neely to Franklin, went off the fill near Riverside camp, turning over three times and breaking Mr. Neely's rib. The car was- driven by, Bense Neely of Highlands and was badly damaged. This wfeck completed Mr. Neely's ist of accidents for the afternoon, enough to suit the most exacting of black cats. The other record broken Sun day afternoon was , smashed by Lewis Rice when his car was hit three times, in three miles, by three other cars, on his way to Horse Cove. This is the iirst time he has been hit by. any car in two years. (Continued from' page one) made the situation most embarrass ing, with loud and obvious hint's for a similar pair. ' V Many, small but very important tricks of the-trade are known by Mr. Speed, details df shoe-making learned only by years of exper ience. He recently instructed a nephew, Sam Speed, in this art, and Sam has, since then under his Uncle's tutorship made enough of the strong serviceable shoes to equip himself and his brothers for the winter. . Many of Mr. Speed's tools, some equipped with cow horn and corn cob handles, were fashioned by himself and cannot be duplicated. He still has the tiny last on which he made -the first pair of shoes for his oldest boy about forty-five years ago. He is resoutceful in,- more ways than tine; he has constructed an anvil from an old railroad loop and helped, a son make - shoes for a mule from an automobile spring. He has tanned twenty-two hides this year since laying up his corn. Mr. Speed christened his new shoes at a Home-Coming of the War Woman (or Pleasant Hill) church in Rabun county, Georgia, recently. He says 'These shoes andTare going to stick together a long time?'. Highlands Students At W. C T. C.
