Tbi 1st dav of November. 1932. ALEX MOORE. Entry Taker. N3-tc D8 , Fake Doctor Dravc Fine of $425 For Sslling Corn "Cure" A former butcher decided to go into the fake-medicine manufactur ing business. He set up shop in a New England State and started out. with a corn salve. Later he extended his line to include cough sirup, female tablets, rheumatic tab lets, female tonic, , lung tonic, la grippe capsules, kidney tonic, nerve sirup, and "antiseptic roots." These preparations were labeled with cur ative claims for a wide variety of diseases. , The manufacturer at first con fined his business to his immediate locality, employing no sales agents and doing little advertising. Finally he shipped some of his nostrums across the state line, thus making his goods subject to seizure and himself liable to prosecution for violation of the Federal food and drugs act. On November 2 the Federal. Court for the District of New Hampshire fined the former butcher $425 on 17 counts for la beling his preparations with false and fraudulent claims as to their ability to cure or prevent disease. "Small-scale medical fakers al most always confine their opera tions to local or intrastate ship ments," says Dr. F. J. Cullen, of the Federal Fo 1 and Drug Ad ministration. "Most States, have laws regulating intrastate sale of fake medicines, but the Federal food and drugs act has jurisdiction over such products only when they are shipped across State borders or are - imported or exported. iThe buyer-- is protected of course, through the enforcement of the State laws and the national pure food and drug law but he should remember that many of the worthless medicines offered for sale are legally labeled although they may be flagrantly advertised. It is always a wise precaution for the prospective purchaser of a medical product carefully to read labels on such . articles and not to trust to hearsay nor to exag gerated advertising.' N. A.
