C) It is always a matter of pride and gratification when a man of the home State receives national notice, and is as deserving of it as the subject mentioned in the fol lowing article which appears in the November issue of "Commerce and Industry Magazine" (A History f Accomplishment of Men ' in Business and Government) publish ed in New York. This refers to Chas. M. Johnson, a native of Pender county, who through sheer ability and force of character has risen to his. present post, and, after the Governor, wields more power in state affairs than anv one other man. He was a. lawyer, and before the loss of his mind was reputed to be one of the leading lawyers of the' state. He was. a member of the Episcopal church and very familiar with the Prayer Book. In the course of our con versation he said, with much earn estness, "I wish 1 had the author ity of . a pope in the Episcopal Church. I would compel them to print the words in one line of a prayer in the Litany in big, bold type, those words are: lhat we Thrqugh the wide experience may put our whole trust and con and capability in addition to co operative public spirit, Charles M. In addition to his duties as ad ministrator of the State's fiscal affairs, Mr. Johnson -is doing the work of eleven other men while drawing a single salary, thus mak ing a huge personal contribution and further showing his sense of civic obligation. He now directs the work of the State Local Gov ernment Commission, Veterans' Iian Board, Banking Commission, the Board of Assessment, Sinking Fund Commission and six other bureaus which would otherwise be guided by men who command im pressive salaries, together with their staff complement. "Through his diversified knowl edge Mr. Johnson is able to per form this, varied work. The broad manner in which he construes ' his service as a public official are highly commendable; "The State. A child does in our innermost consciousness the words of. that prayer "our whole trust and confidence," and just lie in the arms of God, who careth for us, and who is able to supply all our needs.
