THURSDAY, DEC. 20, 1934 THE FRANKLIN PRESS and THE HIGHLANDS MACON IAN PAGE THREE SOCIAL ACTIVITIES and COMINGS AND GOINGS WINS PRIZE David Lenoir Carpenter, small son of Mr. and Mrs. Zeb Carpen ter, of Prentiss, has received one of the gold medals awarded by Sears-Roebuck company in a na tional baby contest held in Chicago. MISS MAUDE McCLURE WEDS CULLOWHEE MAN Miss Maude McClure and Andy Bryson were married on Sunday, December 9, at 4 o'clock at the home of the groom at Cullowhee in the presence ofva few relatives and intimate friends of the couple. The marriage vows were read by the Rev. P. L. Elliott of the facul ty of Western Carolina Teachers College. Mrs. Bryson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto McClure, of Otto. She is a graduate of the Daughters of the American Revolu tion school at Tomassee, S. C, and for several months has been a stu dent at Western Carolina Teachers College at Cullowhee. Mr. Bryson is the son of Vance Bryson, of Cullowhee, and was t;he first person to receive the Bachelor of Science degree from Western Carolina Teachers' College." Mr. and Mrs. Bryson are now at home to their friends at Cullo whee. Mrs. C. B. Brown, Sr., spent the latter part of the past week in Atlanta, Ga., visiting friends. Messrs. Clyde Reid and Ted Bry ant spent the week-end in Ashe villel Mrs Everette Rickman, of Wood row, spent the week-end visiting her father, Robert Sheffield, at West's Mill. George Carpenter, Jr., who ar rived from Valdese Friday to at tend the funeral of his mother, is remaining here several days with his father. Edwin Cunningham came up from Atlanta, Ga., Friday for a visit with Miss Sallie Hurst, at her home on Main street. Franklin friends of Reid Cabe will be interested to learn that he has been elected president of the Parent-Teacher association at Ac cokeek, Md., where he and his fam ily now reside. Miss Lily Rankin spent one day the past week in Clayton, Ga., with Miss Mae McDowell, who has been ill for several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. C. Tom Bryson and daughter, Ruth, and Mrs. Wil ey Clark, spent Tuesday in Ashe ville shopping. U. N. Carpenter, of Coweeta, was among the visitors here last Fri day. Highlands EDITED BY MRS. SOME C. C. Camp in Horse Cove will receive their discharges Most of these men have been in camp about fifteen months. 3 DEERS KILLED BY HIGHLANDS MEN W. W. Edwards, E. R. Gilbert and Geter Buchannan killed a deer each on their recent hunt in Pis gah Forest. PRESBYTERIAN SUNDAY SCHOOL TO GIVE PAGEANT A pageant, "The Christmas Story," will be presented by members of the Presbyterian sunaay next Sunday morning at the Pres byterian church. The pageant tells the Christmas story in pantonine with the chorus singing carols. Miss Dorothea Harbison is directing the pageant in the absence of Mrs. E. R. McCarty. MUCH CONSTRUCTION WORK UNDER WAY Fred McGonigal of Atlanta planning to build a summer home at Highlands Estates right away. Jack Hall is contractor for the building. The Floyd home at the club is practically completed, and the Kline and Black houses are well under way. Charles Robert Patton and Jeff Enloe, Jr., who are attending North Carolina State College at Raleigh, arrived here last week to spend the Christmas holidays with their parents. Mrs. J. H. Cardock, Mrs. Oscar Bryant, Mrs. R. M. Ledford and daughter, Miss Willie Mae Led ford, spent Tuesday in Asheville shopping. Mrs. D. Robert Davis and son, Charles, spent the first of this week in Clay county visiting rel atives and friends. Mrs. D. D. Rice and Mrs. Em ory Hunnicutt spent Tuesday in Asheville shopping, Ernest Rankin returned to his home here Sunday after spending some time in Lavonia, Ga., with Jule G. Siler, who has been se riously ill for several days. Mr. Siler was reported to be some what improved. Dr. Frank Johnson, of Winston Salem, came here Friday to attend the funeral of his mother-in-law, Mrs. George Carpenter, Saturday. Mrs. William Justice, of Frank lin Route 2, Mrs. S. L. Cabe, of Toccoa, Ga., and Jonas Talley, of Highlands, were here Saturday to attend the funeral of their sister, Mrs. George Carpenter. Mrs. G. . Frank Johnson has re turned to her home in Winston- Salem after spending some time here with her father, George Car I penter, at his home on Iotla street. Mr. and Mrs. Neville Sloan ar rived from Atlanta, Ga., Monday ; to spend part of this week here 1 on business. Mr. and Mrs. George P. Young and John D. Hunter, of Naugatuck, Conn., and Mr. and Mrs. Harold , Rapp, of Bethel, Conn., have re ! turned to their homes after a visit here with Mr. and Mrs. Young's son, Don Young, and Mrs. Young. Mrs. Ella Peterson and daughter, Miss Tbelma Peterson, of Ashe ville, spent Sunday here visiting Mrs. Peterson's sister, Miss Mary Sanders, at her home on Iotla street. ' Highlights T. C. HARBISON new hotel is also getting a good start, in spite of bad weather. There was a dance at the C. C Camp in Horse Cove Thursday night. Several Highlands people were invited. Miss Ethel Calloway will spend three weeks during Christmas va cation in Atlanta taking a course in beauty culture. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Root spent last week in Charleston, S. C. They are leaving again this week to spend the holidays with their son in Dillon, S. C. Recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hall at their home here were Capt. and Mrs. H. H. Haag, of East Point, Ga., and Miss Louise Hunter, of Pendleton, S. C. Joe Moore was here from Frank lin Tuesday morning. L. K. McCarty was taken to Augusta, Ga., Monday for medical attention. Mrs. McCarty accom panied him. They will be away for several days. Mr. and Mrs. Tudor Hall made a trip to Asheville Wednesday. Harry Holt was in Highlands Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hodgson and Marguerite Hodgson left for Ath ens, Ga., this week to spend the hofidays. Charlie Paul left Tuesday morn ing for Indian River City, Fla. Funeral Held Here For Betty Reid, 8 Funeral services for Betty Reid, 8, were conducted Sunday after noon at 2 o'clock at the Franklin Methodist church by the Rev. Frank Blqxham, rector of St. Agnes Episcopal church, assisted by the Rev., C. C. Herbert, pastor of the Methodist church. Betty, who had been ill for the past five weeks, died in a hospital in Detroit, Mich., Wednesday, De cember 1, after a mastoid opera tion. The child was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Reid, of Detroit, Mich., formerly of Frank lin, and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Anderson, of Franklin, and Mr. and Mrs. George Reid, of Franklin Route 4. Betty is survived by her parents and one brother, George, Jr. Tellico The state has the road from Lost Bridge to Stiles; a distance of about one mile, about graveled. Murphy Slagle is seriously ill at this writing. Bora to Mr. and Mrs. Jud Smith on November 23, a son, Albert Howard. Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Smith, of Iotla, were visiting Mrs. Smith's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John De Hart this week. Clint Byrd and two sisters, Ruth and Nell, were in Asheville shop ping recently.
