PAGE FOUR THE FRANKLIN PRESS and THE HIGHLANDS MACONIAN THURSDAY, JAN. 17, 1934 a., u U,t IUH UU( W and which con tains Four Great 'WUaHAMIUN NOAH CARLYLE said tnat no age need go down to destruction if only the e arise a man who knows his times and can lead. Noah had one of these qualifica tions but not the other. He could not lead. He preached for one hundred and twenty years to an ever-diminishing congrega tion. , You can imagine i the derisive com ments of his neigh- IboTS. Forty days I and nights of rain, fi ' . indeed! u never nK9 r had happened be fore, it never could happen. Noah was a crazy old fool. Rut it did come! In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the win dows of heaven were opened. And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights. ... And every living substance was destroyed. It is an interesting question for every man to ask himself: "If I had been on the earth in the days of Noah, should I have been one of the survivors or one of the wise ones who knew it all, If I had been in Jerusalem in the days of Jesus, should I have been one of the few who saw Truth, even in its rough peasant garb, or should I have stood with the respectable, Rainbow Springs Many cases of a mild form of in fluenza have been reported in Rain bow Springs and vicinity and th number of cases seems to be in creasing daily. Dr. and Mrs. Frank Killian have gone to Los 'Angeles, Calif., where Dr. Killian plans to attend a med ical clinic. They plan to return in three or four months. Meanwhile Dr. Edgar Angel, of Franklin, is serving in Dr. Killian's capacity as company physician for the W. M. Ritter Lumber company. The Rainbow Springs school ha reopened after three weeks Christ mas holiday. Jess Brooks, superintendent of woods operations for the W. M. Ritter Lumber company, has been confined to his home with influenza for several days. He is reported to be improving. Mr. and Mrs. Don Smith of the Ritter Camp left Monday of last week to visit friends and relatives in West Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Verne Bateman j c :i.rVf Bittpr Tanm left re arm Ittliiujr u """" r cently on a visit to friends and relatives' in Tennessee. Mr. Bate man returned to the camp Tuesday of last week. The Rev. Joe Bishop, of Sylva, filled his appointment here Satur day and Sunday. A W. Agee left Tuesday of last week on an extended trip to Miami and other points in Florida. Troy Sheffield, machinist for the W. M. Ritter Lumber company, was confined to his home several davs with influenza. He is now able to be out again. Stiles The Rev. T. D. Denny filled his regular appointment at Tellico church Saturday and Sunday. Miss Francis Solesbee, of Frank lin was visiting relatives and friends here the past week. Ralph Anderson, of Polkton, N. C, spent the holidays with his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Anderson. ' Creud DeHart and Lon Cook were the guests of Furman An derson Sunday. "Sol" Fullbright, of Cullowhee, was the guest of E. B. Byrd Sat urday night. E. B. ' Byrd and Furman Ander son made a business trip to Franklin Monday. Tt is reported that F. fc. Ander son, who is in the hospital at f ,k;A A. "U. UnU HikU " HMUl ivatu, mmj Traaam . . well fed majority, shouting, 'Away with this disturber. Crucify'? Only a few have courage and vision to stand against the crowd; Noah had both in plentiful amounts. Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he. A grand tribute to a man who stood firm and true when humanity as a whole went wrong. He did what God told him to do, and he was justified in the result. And ;hen ? If you dr I had written the story we should have pictured the serene ld age of Noah, in his uniform as i retired admiral of the navy intro duced to the fast multiplying pos terity of mankind as the man who saved the world. We should have irovided for him a future worthy of his great achievement. The rec ord shocks us: And Noah was drunken. Drunk perhaps with his success. Drunk with pride when people told him how all his weather predictions had come true. Drunk with the iraise which he had richly earned and could not wisely appreciate. Drunk also with wine. A shame ful scene as he lay in his tent, Ham peering in with mocking laughter, and the other sons doing their sorrowful duty. Noah was drunken. The man who had saved the world did not con tinue in the work of its salvation. The new age that followed the flood had to find new leaders for its new problems. Yet so lqng as the rainbow overarches the storm cloud the world shall remember the integrity and courage and obedience of Noah. (Next week: Abraham) Morganton, is slowly improving. We wish him a speedy recovery. We are glad to- report our road is looking fine as far as the gravel s poured and we are hoping that it won't be long until ' it is com pleted, for our school bus can't get to the point where it is supposed to go. MEATS FOR CANNING Some canners of meat products import some of their meat from South America. This is particularly true of corned beef, which is ex ported in great quantity from Ar gentina and Uruguay. The label on such products, though showing to be canned in the United States, mentions the country of origin. There are 114,000 blind persons in the United States.
