Heaven's Window
With Deep Affection to the Mem
ory iof Laura Siler Slagle
"Why are you leaning from
Heaven's window, Mother? For
days you have been watching
there."
"Laura is coming, my daughter!
Laura, the faithful and true! Love
that will not let her go, has kept
her on Earth until her busy hands,
doing always for others, have been
crippled with pain and useless for
years. The willing feet have been
moving slower-and slower till they
no longer can lift her wasted body.
Her eyes, as blue as the blue
mountains of home, cannot scan
the familiar outlines any more. Her
tongue, used only to form words
of kindness, a rare gift indeed, can
now only whisper trembling words
of love and farewell!
"After a long life of love and
sacrifice, these afflictions had to
come, that her dear ones could
willingly let her go.
"I left her when she was only
eighteen, to make a home for a
lonely father and younger broth
ers and sisters. AH of her life
she has had heavy burdens to bear,
and she has done them faithfully
and cheerfully! She has suffered
cruel disappointments down to the
very last years of her life, but no
one heard a bitter word from
Laura! She has looked for, and
'seen the rainbow through the
rain.' She has lived her life in
the same little mountain bound
valley, with few glimpses of the
outside world. She brought the
world to herself with books of
poetry and travel. Her broad mind
and soul and heart were not nar
rowed by her narrow life. For she
gave of herself always to her fel
low man. She got much out of
life, for in her quiet and unasum
ing way, she put much into it.
"'And of such its the Kingdom
of Heaven,' and she is coming in
to her reward!
"Bring me her babies, daughter!
Lay the tiny Alberta in my lap.
Elizabeth and Eloise can lean by
my knees ! And where is the fine !
lad Maxwell? Ah, there he comes,
jumping along, holding to his Uncle
Fred's hand! Go call your father
and other brothers and sisters,
Fanny! What a family welcome
she will get! Each little child as
