AUXILIARY PLANS CHICKEN AND OYSTER DINNER HIGHLANDS, Dec. 4.-An oys ter and creamed chicken dinner for the benefit of the Highlands Episr copal church is being planned by the Woman's Auxiliary to be giv en at the home of Mrs. W. S. Davis on Thursday, December 12. A small admission will be charged, and every one is cordially invited to attend. Mrs. J. A. Hines is head of the committee in charge of the plans. WINTER COMES With the thermometer at the government station three miles south of Highlands' registering 14 de grees Monday, which until that time had been the lowest official record here this year, Highlands has had real winter weather this week. It is usually from one to three degrees colder in Highlands than at the station. The weather LETTER AN APPEAL FOR ACTION Editor : Will you give me space in your paper to speak to the people of Macon county on a subject that is vital to our peace, purity and safe ty? Jf there were no conflicts' be tween God and the devil over man, then what I wish to say would be unnecessary. The strife is on and is fierce and man's heart and will is the bat tle ground. The world has to acknowledge that the devil holds great sway today. Even children recognize this fact in them and excessive wickedness is reaching down into the infantile age everywhere as is evidenced by their lives cursing, stealing, drinking, having their own way with parents and all no fear at God or man. Many parents are worse than many children because the responsibility rests on them. How many parents make criminals of their own children? Think of the disregard for hu man life, the life of the body, to say nothing of the soul. One hun dred and forty-four thousand more lives lost by auto accidents in the last fifteen years than in all our wars since 1776. All this carelessness for the body and for God's sake, who really cares for the soul in a way to really get life into it? Let the world tell us. Where's the weep ing over sin and souls? Where's the real praying? Where's the preaching that brings conviction, repentance, and life? Where's the holy power and conditions that cause God to be manifestly with us? holy power and conditions that cause God to be manifestly with us? HARBISON has continued cold with very little change so far this week. Dr. Clarence Mitchell was ap pointed this week as manager of the Highlands branch of the Jack son County Bank, replacing Nor man Brown. Dr. Mitchell went to work in the bank Monday morn ing. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Jessup, of Delwood, N. C, were the guests of Mrs. J. Z. Gottwals Thanksgiv ing week. ' Mrs, Ollie Rogers has gone to Houston, Texas, where she ex pects to find work for the winter. Mr. Arial, cashier of the Jackson County Bank of Sylva, spent sever al days in Highlands recently. Betsy and Jack Potts were home from school for Thanksgiving. Lieut, and Mrs, Thad D. Smith, of the CCC Camp in Horse Cove, are occupying Miss Nail's house for the winter. - PRESS All this looms large before the gJod peoplex who think and care and is a world challenge to the best that's in them. In the face of all this sin and discouragement, thank God there are good people and true preachers yet. These are the salt, the hope, the God-ordained and the only God-appointed means through which better times in economical, moral and spiritual sense can come. My appeal is to you, Oh men and women of God. Let's not give up. All the infiniteness of God's power is at our command. All that is lacking to bring the change so many of you have told me you wanted in regard to drunkenness, social and political sins and spirituality in the churches is for us to furnish the human active power to match God's against it and make His will ours in a way equal to the emergency. The world and the devil say it can't be done; but we, as persuas ive welfare workers, give both the lie and say it can and that in a large way. We have a plan that will suc ceed where adopted and used just as sure as the gospel succeeds. This plan is described in a book which we hope to have ready for use soon. As we come to you with our mass meetings and religious and temperance shows, join hearts and hands with us, as those have whom we have seen. Geo. W. Seay. REGARDING OUR DEBT TO THE ANIMAL KINGDOM As the Yuletide approaches a time in which love and kindness is extended to all : Did I say "all,' or have we perhaps forgotten the tender appreciation due the animal kingdom; their necessary service so willingly rendered us? Their love and loyalty? The cheer and beau ty brought by them into our lives ? Or, do we sometimes repay these values in abuse, starvation, suffer ing? Oh, with what dread do some of us anticipate the boyish shotgun, the sling-shot, the hunts men's vacation, now so near at hand! Of the boy, we say "child ish pleasure;" of the huntsman, "sport." Oh, when shall we learn that these beautiful creatures bril liant songsters, sportive squirrels, all in pursuit of their domestic happiness are just as entitled to safety, freedom and life as we ? Yet they are hunted down, possibly maimed and thus, hiding and Weed ing, suffer perhaps days until the end. Does this appear humane and proper? We treat, I fear, the so called instinct in animals too light ly. I am impelled -here to relate a little story I read the other day, by E. Harrington, holding back the tears as I read. , "Once when I was sent on a mission to the Chi State, I saw a litter of young pigs trying to nour ish themselves from their dead mother. After a little they looked at her with quick glances, and all left her and ran away. For she looked at them no more ani seem ed to be no longer akin to them selves. What they had loved was thejr mother not her body, but that which made it live!" Social precedents still tolerates our so called ,Jsport." Fortunately we have outlawed the more brutal practices along these lines. However, civilization, in this, has not yet arrived at the place where noble culture is founded upon ten derness of heart. So let us take our inspiration from the quick re spouse all animals show to kind ness and thus make" this particular Christmas one in witch all join in resolution to show more con sideration to all animal, life.
