PAGE SIX THE FRANKLIN PRESS AND THE ■FUIIBeTM... Resettlement Payments In Macon Total $10,077 Many Farmers Given Aid Through Federal Agency Payments totaling $10,077 were made in Macon county by the re settlement administration from July 1, 1935, to June 26, 1936, according to information received by R. M. Gantt, state director for the nation al emergency council. Of these payments loans totaling $7,572 were made to 79 persons and $2,505 of grants to 86 persons were disbursed. An additional activity of the re settlement administration, that of farm debt adjustments, showed that in Macon co.unty three cases had been adjusted through May, 1936, involving an original indebtedness of $2,675. In addition to the saving through .adjustment there were three cases where loans had been extend ed or where a reduction of inter est rate had ibcen effected. Further benefit frcm this activity was .noted in the taxes paid as a result of ad justments, which in Macon county amount to $68. Figures for State The state of North Carolina had received rehabilitation loans through June 26, 1936, amounting to $1,834,- 985.56 which were actually certified for payment. There remained the sum of $202,718.52 in unpaid com mitments. Rehabilitation grants dur ing the same period were advanced in the sum of $231,611.97. A total of 7,441 persons in North Carolina received loans, while 9,238 persons were the recipients of grants. There were 910 cases considered by farm debt adjustment commit tees in North Carolina during the period September 30, 1935, through May 31, 1936, of which 859 cases were adjusted. The indebtedness prior to adjustment totaled $1,151,712 while the reductions made eq.ualled $289,983. Additional results include $31,799 of taxes paid and 107 cases of interest reductions or extension agreements. National Activities In the United States the resettle ment administration has made al lotments in the amount of $107,075,- 758 for rural rehabilitation loans and grants. Loans and grant vouch ers certified for payment in the period July 1, 1935, to June 26, 1936, amounted to $90,855,323, leav ing an available balance for future ktans and grants and unpaid loan commitments of $16,220,435 as of June 26, 1936. The farm debt adjustment phase of the Resettlement Administration program, which is designed to bring together farmers and their creditors in order to make possible a lessen ing of the obligations of the farm ers, had served in 31,566 cases in volving an indebtedness of $93,327,- 379 prior to adjustment, with a re- luction effected of $22,973,699. These settlements ca.used $1,739,831 of taxes Mr. Gantt emphasized the fact that the 112,000 committee members volunteered their services and re ceived only a small per diem rate for the time actually spent in farm debt adjustment meetings. Poultry Feed and Egg Prices Advancing The expected rise in poultry feed prices will increase the necessity for good flock management, accord ing to Roy S. Dearstyne, head of State college poultry department. He urges poultrymen to check over their plants to see whether they are overcrowding their laying houses. There should be four square feet of floor space for each bird. “If you have more birds than you can house adequately,” he said, “cull out the inferior ones and sell them at o.nce, as overcrowding will devi.talize the chickens, check egg production, and may lead to disease. “Be sure to have enough nest, feeders, and water to keep the flock well supplied, as this will help keep egg production at a high level. “You cannot afford to give ex pensive feed to birds that are not paying their own way. Cull out those which are questionable. “Don’t try to save money with cheap substitute or by cutting dow.n on the amount of the ration. This will cut egg production and impair the health of the birds. “Remember, egg prices will prob ably go up., and you want to pro duce as many as you can. “It is feed that makes the eggs and maintains the body. If you cannot feed them properly, dispose of them at once. You can’t make mo.ney with a half-fed poultry flock.” Dearstyne also urges poultry men to develop their egg market, particularly local market. By grading their eggs carefully, h» pointed out, they can 'build up a reputation and secure premimm prices for their best eggs.
