Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Mathews, of Fort Valley, Ga., were 'recent guests of Mrs. Moody Bolick and Miss Myrtle Bolick at their home on Riverview street. Mrs. A. A. Drake, of Hiawassee, Ga., is Spending this week visiting relatives and friends on Cartooge- chaye. Mr. and Mrs. Rupert Bowron and daughter, Phyllis Ann, of Eustis, Fla., are spending two weeks with Mrs. W. L. Higdon at the Ashear apartment. Art Course Offered by University Extension Division Births The University of North Carolina extension division will conduct a course in the 'history and apprecia tion of art in Franklin beginning Friday, September 11. All persons interested in enrolling in the class are asked to meet with the in structor, Mrs. Corinne McNeir, on that date at 4:30 p. m. at the high school building. Four sejnester hours’ credit will be given to teachers taking this course. These credits are applicable both toward raising and renewing certificates and toward gaining a college degree. The course is also open without credit to persons who are not p.ublic school teachers. Classes will be held once weekly for sixteen weeks. This course consists of a survey of art in western Europq from 1300 to 1900 with emphasis on^the art of the greatest periods; The Italian renaissance, the Flemish, D.utch, Spanish, and French schol ars. The purposes of the course are to trace the development of paint ing and sculpture from the begin ning of the Italian renaissance to the twentieth century, to familiar ize the student with the great mast erpieces' of art in that period; to give the student a basis for critical judgment and appreciation of art m general; and to give the student a background for teaching art appre ciation in the public schools. The course will be fully illustrated by lantern slides and f>rints, the latter from the Carnegie art collection of the university. Welch Holds Revival At Barker’s Creek The Rev. C, C, Welch, pastor of the Ridgecrest Baptist church, re turned Sunday from Barker’s Creek, Jackson county, where he conduct ed a two-weeks revival meeting. He reported that 40 persons professed Christianity during the revival. Box Supper Planned At Liberty School Sept. 11 A box supper will be given at Liberty school Friday night, Sep tember 11, the proceeds to be used in_ installing a water system for the school.
