B. IT. Hawks et al.
The defendants, B. H. Hawks,
will take notice that an action as
Cold Frame
Will Help Gardeners Get
Early Start
A cold frame will help gardeners
get an early start with their early
vegetables, said H. R. Niswonger,
extension" horticulturist at State
college. '
Seed may be sown in shallow
boxes in the house, and after the
plants come up they may be trans
planted to a cold frame to harden
before they are set out in the
open garden or field.
Niswonger said cabbage, cauli
flower, lettuce, tomato, pepper", egg
plant, and other such vegetables
may be started this way.
The seed may be sown in the
shallow boxes the latter part of
January or early in February, he
continued..
A cold frame resembles a to
bacco seed bed, he said, although
the two are not exactly alike.
The wooden frarrje enclosing, the
bed should be 15 to 18 inchesi high
along the back and 8 to 10 inches
high along the front side. For the
average home garden the bed
should be 6 feet wide and 24 feet
long.
Wires or wooden slats placed
across the top of the bed will help
hold the cover cloth off the; plants.
The cloth may be second-hand 'sash
or bleached muslin. Muslin satu
rated with linseed oil will hold
warmth in the bed and shed rain
water.
The cold frame should be located
in a sunny place, facing the south.
Six inches of good loam soil mixed
with garden manure should' be
placed within the frame.
Plants may be transferred from
the seed boxes to the frame when
they have developed two leaves.
Set them two to four inches apart.
They may be transplanted to s the
garden when they begin to crowd
or when all danger of frost or
freezing is past.
Ventilation should be provided
even on cold days. As the weather
gets warmer, the cover should be
rolled back a little more each day
to harden the young plants. They
should be watered on mornings
when the temperature is rising.
