PACE EIGHT Till FRANKLIN PRESS AND THE HIGHLANDS MACONUN THURSDAY, FID. 11 .III? : i WPA BUILDING GOUNTYROADS (Continued from Page One) use of crushed stone, this stone also being quarried by us. "The ; works progress adminis tration is opening many mountain roads and making them passable in all sorts of weather where no statistics in terms of miles would show the commensurate benefits, for many roads are rendered im passable in bad weather either by improper drainage or perhaps by one small section of the road which is bad. In many such places we have repaired the offending spot, and , where ' necessary have dug drainage ditches or graded' the road, thus by rebuilding a fraction of a mile making the entire length of the road useable at all times, y Farm-to-market road projects are perhaps the most important and far-reaching of those carried on by the WPA. The Grange, the Farm Bureau Federation, and prac tically ev.ery other agricultural group in North Carolina have urg ed their construction. ' The fifth district of tlu North Carolina works progress adminis tration, with a total of 27 farm-to-market road projects, has complet ed 704.1 miles of highway. Relief laborers employed in this work total 3,547, and federal expenditures to . date amount, to $853,299.68. Over, seven hundred miles of highway is now under construction. Our Bird Friends In Winter It is easy ; to have birds about your yard in winter, if you want them, whether you live in town or country. In The Progressive Farm er Alexander Sprunt, noted writer on' nature subjects, gives the folr lowing definite instructions about how to attract bird neighbors: ' "To bring birds to your yard, you must provide them with food. A feeding table should be at least three or- four feet high. Place it in a reasonably sheltered spot but not too near shrubbery where a lurk ing cat may crouch. Any simple board attached to an upright stake will do, for the birds are not par ticular. "A pocket bird guide, a pencil, and a notebook will be a wonder ful combination to the invalid and it will amaze all concerned to see how the, list of visitors to the feed ing table will grow, day by day. The spreading of the table means little--a few crumbs, some grain, a piece of suet, and you have provid ed a sumptuous banquet. Sunflow er v seed, cracked corn, wheat, and the like make excellent attractions for the feathered boarders and crumbs are welcomed as well."
