WPA Supervisors
From Four Counties To
Meet In Franklin
There will be a meeting of WP A
supervisors and forewomen for the
counties of Polk, Henderson, Tran
sylvania and Macon, in Franklin,
May 5 and 6.
These supervisors and forewomen
will be given training along prac
tical lines to hand on to the work
ers in the sewing rooms, lunchrooms
and other projects on which wo
men are employed.
Mrs. Margaret Johnson,, area
supervisor, will preside and the
program will be made up of dis
cussions led by the different sup
ervisors. 1
Airs. Lillian Speck, district direc
tor of women's and professional
projects, will be present at the
opening of the meeting.
' There will be about 35 women
present.
Three Liquor Cars
Captured by Officers
Highway Patrolman E.' W. Jones
and Deputy Sheriff John Dills
chased and captured three cars con
taining in all 275 gallons of liquor
Wednesday night.
All three were stopped on and
near the Georgia road and one
driver was caught and taken to
jail. The drivers of the other two
cars escaped with several compan
ions. ' .

INDIAN FLINT MAKERS
Indians who roamed the North
west before the White Man's in
fluence extended into the. region
were, among other things,' expert
miners. .
Pits several feet deep and now
partly filled with dirt 'have been
found in the vicinity of Golden
Valley,. Dodge and Halliday, N. D.,
giving evidence of flint mining Op
erations conducted by the Redmen.
Dark brown stone, known as
smokey quartz, was the predom
inating mineral matter used by
the early day Indians in this sec
tion, t The stone was used to fash
ion arrow heads and primitive axes.
For many years flint weapons
made from smoky quartz have
been uncovered in abundance oh
sites ' of abandoned Indian villages
of the Missouri River Valley and
in other localities of this and ad
joining states. .
The greatest single source of
most flint used by Indians has
been found in the Knife River Val
ley near the Killdeer mountains in
northwestern North- Dakota. It is
believed that the valley was so
named because of the crude knives
hacked from the flint found in
that "region.

QUEER PLACES IN LONDON
Five hundred reporters and at
least 200 ' cameramen will occupy
high-priced seats and special
perches along the route of the cor
onation procession. That many
more will "work" the crowd for
human-interest material.
Average price of the 500 seats
alotted to reporters is about $7.50;
the cameramen must plank down
an average of $15 for their pitches.
Reason for .the difference in
prices is that many special "nests"
have been prepared for the pho
tographers in and around statues
and other peculiar places.

scavenger of the woods is not the
common crow, according to L. E.
Grouppel of Rosedale, former coun
ty superintendent of schools of
Jersey county. The crow is bad
enough, says Groppel, but the blue
jay is more destructive of song and
insectivorous birds' nests, eggs and
young.
