Nitrate of Soda Is
Fatal to Livestock
Sodium nitrate in fertilizer is
good for grass but bad for live
stock. Dr. C. D. Grinnells, veterinarian
at the N. C. Agricultural Experi
ment Station, warns that nitrate
often causes a rapid, fatal inflama
tion of the stomach.
Before turning stock into a pas
ture where nitrate has been appli
ed, he said, be sure that enough
rain has fallen to wash the nitrate
off the grass and down into the
soil.
He also cautioned against leaving
bags of nitrate around where do
mestic animals can get at it.

Plant Soybeans and
Cowpeas During May
Soybeans, "the crop with a fv
ture," produce a' better yie'd of
hay and seed if planted , in May
rather than in June pf July.
The many uses" that are being
developed for this crop are fast
making it a 'valuable source of cash
income, to say nothing of its value
in soil-building, said E. C. Blair,
extension agronomist at State col
lege, Grpwers who wish to have a
good acreage of soil-conserving
crdps to qualify for payments under
e soil-conservation program will
ind soybeans well adapted for this
purpose, he added.
For. plowing or disking under
soybeans, velvet beans; or cowpeas
as green manure after they have
attained a normal growth of at
least two months, payments will be
made at the rate of $2 an acre. If
they are left on the land, the pay
ment will be $1 an acre.
Blair also pointed out that $1 an
acre will be paid for planting cro
talaria, which is considered the best
legume that can be grown in sandy
soil areas of this state.
Velvet beans should be planted
as early in May as possible, while
crotalaria should be sown during
the latter part of the month. Cow
peas may be sown . at about the
same time, as soybeans.
Blair added that the payments
usually take care of the cost of
growing these crops, but their soil
building value to a farm is worth
far more than the payments.
- These crops may also be used to
replace, cotton, tobacco, and other
soil-depleting crops when farmers
wish to earn the diversion pay
ments offered for taking land out
of depleting crops and putting it
int6 conserving crops.

pounds of steel and 500 pounds of Iron, 70 pounds
of safety glass, 180 pounds of rubber Including tires,
60 pounds of copper, 20 pounds of aluminum, and
other materials too numerous to mention.
Thus the automobile industry Is now the No. 1
consumer of steel, malleable Iron, rubber, ell, plate
glass, mohair, nickel, lead and gasoline, the latest
survey shows. Total amounts used by the Industry in
a single year are shown by the tables above, with the
percentage of total production these figures represent.

Says Brick Brooder
Is Best For Poults
"A brick brooder has it all oyer
a turkey or chicken hen in raising
poults," said C. Fi Parrish, exten
sion poultry specialist at State
college. .
A hen can .be used successfully
in small flocks, he added, but un
less great care is exercised, the
losses will be heavy.
Either way, he continued, the
young turkeys should not be al
lowed to range on ground with
older birds or where adult turkeys
or chickens ranged the year be
fore. Where a brick brooder and a
brooder house are used, both should i
be cleaned thoroughly and moved
to a new location not used by
poultry or turkeys during the past
two years. .
The brooder should be operated
in about the same manner as for
chicks. Start the brood with a
temperature of 95 to 100 degrees
where canopy brooders are used,
or a room temperature of 75 to 80
degrees when brick brooders . are
used.
Reduce the temperature gradual
ly. After six or seven weeks, de
pending on the weather, the heat
can be discontinued.
Poults are the ' least intelligent
of fowls, and. must be taught where
to eat and drink and where to
find warmth. ..V
Liquid milk makes a good food
for the first feedings. The solid
food may be oatmeal flakes, John
ny cake, boiled eggs, cornbread
crumbs, tread soaked in milk with
the surplus milk squeezed out, or
other such palatable feedstuff.
. If these feeds are used, they
should be mixed with fresh, tender,
green feed chopped fine. Start
feeding a good balanced ration,
with plenty of protein, as soon as
possible. Some growers prefer to
start the poults right away with a
regular baby chick starter. .
Permanent Pastures
Now Ready to Graze
Beef cattle should be turned into
permanent pastures in May, for by
this time the grass is in good con
dition for grazing, said Earl H.
Hostetler, professor of animal hus
bandry at State college.
While on the summer range, he
continued, the animals will require
less care and will need no feed
other than good pasturage, but they
should be inspected regularly and
given plenty of salt.
The bull should be turned with
the beef cattle herd about the first
nf Mav fin that next vear's calf
crop will be early and uniform,
Professor Hostetler added.
"And remember, a purebred bull
improves the value of the calves
and in the long run is worth more
than he costs," he says. .
