Thursday; may 6, 1937 THE FRANKLIN PRESS AND THE HIGHLANDS MACONIAN PAGE SEVEN Students Of Syracuse School To Visit Franklin The senior class of Syracuse For estry school, specializing in forest products engineering composed of . 16 students, will leave Syracuse Monday for their . annual three weeks' southern trip. They will vis it some of the principal lumber cen ters in the south for the purpose of observing operations and study ing methods- followed in various types of manufacturing plants. They will be under the direction of Prof. Hiram ; L. Henderson and will travel in their own bars. The first stop will be at the Keith Planing Mill in' Lititz, Pa. The following day they will visit the lumber division .in the Depart ment of Commerce, Washington, I). C, where officials will give talks on certain phases of their work. The next stop will be at Kingsport, Tenn., where the distillation plant of the Eastman Tennessee Corpora tion will.be inspected. The paper mills of the Mead Corporation will be attended the following day. The class will travel by way of Asheville to Franklin, North Carolina, which is the head quarters of the Na'ntahala national forest, one of the oldest national forests in the country where a great deal of utilization work is going on. The W. T. Smith Lumber Co., at Chapman, Ala., is the next stop. Portable band mills and large saw mills and logging jobs will occupy the attention of the students at this location. Thence, the group will visit Brewerton, ,Ala., and the T. R. Miller Lumber Co.', where the wood preservation plant and steam distillation plant for extracting rosin and turpentine ,will be studied. The most southerly point touched will be Century, Fla., the home of the Alger-Sullivan Lumber Co. The students will be required to prepare a written report on their observations when they return to Syracuse. Marines Want Recruits From This District Forty vacancies in the United States Marines will be filled from this district during May at the Savannah (Ga.) headquarters, ac cording to an announcement by Captain A. C. Small, the officer in charge. The minimum height requirement has been lowered from 66 to 64 inches. The maximum requirement remains at 74 inches. In addition to the regular quota there are a number of vacancies for qualified musicians, it was stated. All applicants must ,be single, without dependents, between 18 and 25 years of age, of good moral character, have a fair education, and must pass the usual rigid phys ical examination. Those accepted will be enlisted and immediately transferred to the Marine barracks at Parris Island, S. C, for basic instruction prepara tory to assignment to regular duty. The Marine corps offers a va riety of duty and educational ad vantages to young men. Upon .com pletion of their initial training at Parris Island many are selected for technical schooling in aviation, radio, motor mechanics, etc. ; all have opportunity to enroll in the Marine Corps Institute where they may learn free of charge some trade, art or science; those seek ing travel and adventure may re quest duty on-board ship or in one of the foreign lands where Ma rines are stationed. Young men in this vicinity desir ing further information about the U. S. Marines may write or visit the Marine corps recruiting . sta tion at Savannah, Ga. Many Placements Made By Employment Service During March, North Carolina stood ninth among all the states in the total number of placements made through public employment offices. North Carolina stood 12th in the number of persons placed in private employment and 11th in the number of new applications. It was exceeded in total placements only by California, Florida, .Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Penn sylvania, and Texas. The national average increase in private placements during March over the same month last year was 107.9 per cent. North Carolina's in crease was 138.1 per cent. Relief placements through the North Carolina state employment service have practically vanished, only nine such placements being made in March. In the nation as a whole, 9,482 relief placements were made during that month. The active file of persons . eligible for relief has dropped in North Carolina from 76,321 in November, 1935, to 44,055 in April,' 1937, indicating that pri vate industry has absorbed 32,266 of those originally applying for re lief work.
