So That's Why
They Cuss!
What makes people cuss? Well,
according to The Progressive Farm
er, here is a scientific explanation
as given by Dr. George W. Crane,
noted psychologist:
"People who have inferiority com
plexes and are afraid are likely to
adopt ptofanily. Those who use
profanity are often people who are
afraid of themselves. They adopt
loud and violent language to Jdd
themselves along, so to speak, and
delude themselves into thinking they
are bold, virile men. They are try
ing to compensate for an inferior
ity complex. They -are like the boy
who whistles on a dark night to
keep, up his courage. They don't
feel the equals of those-with whom
they associate, so they try to im
press their friends with their foul
language. Chronic users of oaths
are usually childlike or immature
in their emotional development,
even though they may 'be grown
men. The strong man or well-adjusted
child doesn't have to rely
on such artifical means for im
pressing his associates."

June 12 Last Day To
rVwIV
June 12 is the last day on which
North Carolina farmers will be al
lowed to sign work sheets for the
1937 soil conservation program, said
E. Y. Floyd, of State college.
The county offices have been in
structed from Washington not to
accept work sheets after that date,

Floyd pointed out.
However, growers who sign work
sheets in time will be eligible to
earn soil-building and diversion
payments by complying with the
terms of the program this year.
Those"" who signed work sheets
for 1936 are fiotVrequired to sign
again for 1937, Floyd continued,
but if they have "bought more land
or otherwise made changes in their
farms, they should notify their
county agents at once.
Work sheets are used in prepar
ing information that will help farm
ers plan their farming operations
so as to take part in the program
and get all the benefits possible.
The work sheet is-not a contract,
Floyd added, and when a grower
signs one he does not place himself
under any obligation whatever. But
a work sheet must be filed " with
the county office if a grower is to
receive any payments. : . '
He pointed out that there are two
reasons why work sheets must be
signed on or before June 12. First,
information prepared from work
sheets signed after June 12 would
be too late to be of use to growers
this year. Second, the ' task of
checking up on growers' compliance
with the program will start in June
in some counties. '

filth. As The Progressive' Farmer
says:
"For their size flies probably
carry more filth than any other
living thing. Their cup-shaped feet
and hairy legs bring filth to your
home ahd table if they can get in.
They bring filth from the dirtiest '
places on your lot or your neigh
bor's lot.
"The kind of bacteria the fly
brings depends on where he has
been. Flies carry all kinds of dis
ease germs tuberculosis, smallpox,
typhoid, infections of the skin, pink
eye, cholera, dysentery, etc.
"What to do about flies? Screens
more screens, better screens. Small
mesh screens. Screens which fit.
Screens which close tight and stay,
tight. Screens without sags, rips, or
rents screens, that absolutely keep
flies out of the house. Of course
there are flytraps and fly paper,
preventives,, sprays, and the like.
But in my opinion there is only one
way to handle the fly question
prohibition by screens. 1
"The mesh of the screen should
be not larger than 16; -an 18-mesh
woujd be better. Screens should
cover tb.e whole window, always on
the outside. All porches, both front
and back, should be securely screen
ed. The porch should be boarded
up at least one foot from the floor
in order to prevent small animals
from scratching holes in the wire
or children from knocking holes.
All chimneys should be covered by
screens."
An acre was defined by Edward
I as the amount of land a yoke of
oxen could plow in a day. Later it
was more definitely measured.
