Franklin, singing in her rich contralto voice, "Calm as the Night," by Bohm, fol lowed by the wedding hymn, "O, Perfect Love," by Barnby. She was accompanied at the piano by John E. Brown, of Hendersonville. Fol lowing Mrs. Herbert's solo, the Rev. John Arthur Flanagan, pastor of the Franklin Presbyterian church, took his place before an arch entwined with ivy and banked with mountain laurel and ever greens. With the first strains of the wedding march from Lohengrin the procession appeared on the ver anda ami descending the steps ent ered a carpeted aisle leading to the altar. The ushers were" James Cooper, of Athens, Ga., brother of the groom; John A. Bulgin and George B. Bulgin, cousins of the bride, and John R. Smith, all of Franklin ; Fred Birchmore, of Athens, Ga., and Roger Huff, of Cleveland,. Tenn. Following the ushers came the bridesmaids, dainty and colorful in gowns of crisp organza. Miss Mil dred Cooper, of' Athens, Ga., sister of the groom, and Miss Rosalind Bulgin, cousin of the bride, of Franklin, wore green; in delightful contrast were Miss Elizabeth Mc Guire, of Franklin, sister of the bride, and Miss Elizabeth Dowdle, of Franklin, in orchid. They were folowed by Mrs. C. R. McCarty, of Highlands, and Miss Dorothy Eaton, of Charlotte, in blue. Each bridesmaid carried an old-fashioned bouquet of spring flowers and wore a coronet to match. After these at ' tendants has taken their place at the altar, the maid of honor, Miss Virginia McGuire, twin sister of the bride, entered alone. A gown of peach organza, similar in design to those worn by the bridesmaids, ac cented her brunette loveliness. She carried a nosegay of old fashioned flowers and wore a matching coro- net As the bride entered, radiant in her mother's wedding gown, the frocks groom and his Trotier, Edward N. Cooper, of Greenville, Tenn., serv ing as best man, took their places at the right of the altar. The bride, who was given in marriage by her brother, William B. McGuire, of Charlotte, wore a. veil of tulle held in place by a coronet of the same material and carried a shower bou quet of gardenias, white roses and lillies of the valley. The impressive ring ceremony was followed by a reception on the lawn. The receiving . line was formed by the wedding party and Mrs. William B. McGuire, mother of the bride, who wore powder blue crepe and a corsage of talisman roses. Mrs. William Weimer Sloan, Mrs. Mark L. Dowdle, and Mrs. Thomas J. Johnston presided at the punch bowls. They were assisted in serving by the Misses Nora Moody, Alice and Margaret Slagle, Ruth Slagle and Margaret Cozad, all of Franklin, and Miss Cather ine. Mclver, of Milledgeville, Ga. The bride is a. graduate of the Woman's College of the University of . North Carolina at Greensboro. Mr. Cooper is district ranger of the Hiawassee district of the Chero kee national forest. He was gradu ated from the School of Forestry of the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Alpha Xi Sigma and Phi Kappa . Phi frater nities. After a weeding trip to New England and Canada, the couple will live in Cleveland, Tenn. Among the out of town guests were: Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Plonk and family, of Macon, Ga. ; Miss Catherine Mclver, of Milledgeville, Ga.; Dr. and Mrs. B. B. McGuire, of Newland, N. C. ; Dr. and Mrs. Wayne McGuire and family, of Sylva, N. C. ; Mr. and Mrs. Milton Goolsby, of Atlanta, Ga. ; Mrs. B. S. Sill and Miss Alice Sill, of At lanta, Ga. ; and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Marsh, of Kingsport, Tenn. Several friends from the U. S. forest service staff in Cleveland, Tenn., where Mr. Cooper is sta tioned, attended. DEAL-HIGDON A marriage that came as a great surprise to their many friends was that of Miss Elizabeth Deal to J. Wayne Higdon, which was solemn ized" Saturday afternoon at the Waynesville Baptist parsonage, Rev. W. Bancom, officiating. The bride is the daughter of W. P. Deal and the late Mrs. Deal, of Franklin Route 4. She is a gradu ate of the Franklin high school and Western Carolina Teachers college, at Cullowhee. She taught school in the Eastern North Carolina schools for a while and for the past few years she has taught in the Macon county public schools. Mr. Higdon, son of Mr. and Mrs. James L. Higdon, of Cullasaja, re ceived his education at Sylva high school and Georgia School of Tech nology at Atlanta, Ga. For several years he was connected with the Georgia Power and Light company. He is now associated with the U. S. forest service, and has been stationed at Franklin for the past two years. Immediately after the ceremony, Mr. and Mrs. Higdon left for a motor trip through the south. WILLIAM B. McGUIRE ENTERTAINS FOR SISTER i As a courtesy to his sister, Miss Margaret McGuire, a bride of Sat urday, William B. McGuire, of Charlotte, entertained with a din ner at the Franklin Lodge and Country club on Friday evening, June 4. The tables were artistically deco rated in spring flowers and the favors were of silver and white. WEDDING BREAKFAST FOR BRIDAL PARTY Beautiful in every detail was the wedding breakfast given Saturday morning by Misses Virginia and Elizabeth McGuire, at the McGuire home, complimentary to their sister, Miss Margaret McGuire, whose marriage took place at 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon. . The bridal motif was carried out in the decorations and a beautiful wedding cake adorned the dining table. The favors, were bride's mint baskets. Quantities of summer flowers were beautifully arranged through out the house. The bride-elect was attired in a be coming princess style gown of the new thistle crepe. Miss Vir ginia McGuire wore a lovely black tucked chiffon, while Miss Eliza beth McGuire was dressed in a beautiful green and white printed chiffatf, RECEIVES PEAFOWLS FROM PUERTO RICO Mrs. Henry Slagle, of Cartooge chaye, received a pair of peafowls Friday from her son, Dr. Dick Slagle, in Puerto Rico, who is do ing clinic work for the government there. Dr. Slagle is over the labor ers in the sugar and coffee planta tions in three clinics. The peafowls were in perfect condition when they arrived. - ' GARDEN CLUB MEETS WITH MRS. A. L. McLEAN The Garden club met at "Knoll acres" the home of Mrs. A. L. McLean, at West's Mill Monday afternoon at 3 o'ekick for their regular monthly business and social meeting, with nine members' pres ent. After the' reports .from the va rious committees were made and the discussions were over, -it was decided the club would have a keno party on Friday evening, June 25, in the American Legion hall. The annual flower show will be held the latter part of July, with the place and date to be announced later. The hostess served delicious re freshments at the close of the meeting. ' The next meeting is scheduled to be held with Mrs. Roy G. Be shears on the first Monday after noon in July. BIRTHDAY DINNER HONORS "GRANDMA" LONG Some 75 people, old and young, gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Young on Route 2 on Sunday, June 6, to pay homage and respect to "Grandma" Long, (Mrs. M. N. Long) on her 79th birthday. This event was reminiscent of olden times in that every one brought baskets full of dinner which provided even more than was necessary for the large gathering. Both "Grandma" Long and her aged husband, M. N. Long, were able to take part in the festivities. Brief talks were made by J. L. Young and Robert (Bob) Donald son. It is hoped by kinsman and the many friends of Mrs. Long that this will become an annual affair.
