THURSDAY, JULY VlM7 THE FRANKLIN PRESS AND THE HIGHLANDS MAC0N1AN PAGE THREE SOCIAL ACTIVITIES and COMINGS AND GOINGS PENDERGRASS-McCRACKEN A very pretty wedding which was solemnized 'Sunday, July 4, was that of Miss Bernice Pender grass to Robert McCracken. The ceremony was performed by Rev. John Teague at the home of, the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Pcndergrass, at Holly Springs. The living room, where a large group of close relatives and friends gathered, was beautifully decorated with hollyhocks. The bride wore a -very becom ing costume of . gray. The groom is the son of Mrs. Laura McCracken, of Holly Springs. A wedding dinner was prepared by the groom's mother, after which they went to th home of the bride's parents where a sup per had been prepared for the wedding party. Mr. and Mrs. McCracken left for Baltimore, Md., 'where Mr. Mc Cracken has a position. MASHBURN-HOLLAND Announcement has been made of the. marriage of Miss Donnie Mashburn to Lester Holland in Clayton, Ga., Saturday, June 19, in' a very simple but impressive ceremony. . Mrs. Holland, who is the daugh ter of Mr. Bert Mashburn, of Cul lasaja, was attired in a very be coming dress-of navy iblue georg ette with white accessories. Mr. Holland is the son of Mrs. A. M. Holland, of Cullasaja. Immediately after the 'ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Holland left for Asheville on a short wedding trip. The bride wore as her traveling gown a suit of gray with - Navy iblue accessories. , Mr. and Mrs. Holland will re turn to their home on the Cullasaja river. Howard Barnard returned to his work in Gatlinburg, Tenn., Monday, after spending the week-end here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Barnard. - Edwin Cunningham, of Atlanta, Ga., came up Sunday for a visit with Miss Sallie Hurst. Will Elmore, who graduated from the State Teachers college in Alpine, Texas, this spring, return ed to his home at West's Mill aturday to spend this summer with his parents, Mr. arid Mrs. J. B. Elmore. Mr. Elmore received his Bachelor . of Science degree from this college where he was a student the past year. Mrs. Dudley B. Hill and two children, Mary and Gilchrist, and Miss Florence A. Basorri, of Wil mington, are spending some time at Trimont Inn. Francis B. Johnson, of West Trenton, N. J., and William S. Johnson, of Charlotte, spent the week-end with, their mother, Mrs Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Watkins and daughter, Mrs. Ross Powell, return ed to their home in Albany, Ga., Monday, after a visit with Mrs. Watkins father, J. A Conley and sister, Mrs. H. O. Cozad. Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Wadswnrth and two sons, Calvin, Jr., and Billy Bryson, of Saginaw, Mich., came in Monday to spend a week with relatives and friends . at West's Mill. Mrs. Wadsworth is the daugh ter of Mrs. Kansie Bryson, for merly of Macon county. Miss Katherine Amnions, who has been spending some time in Toccoa, Ga. with relatives and friends, is. spending this week with her uncle, E, V. Ammons and Mrs. Amnions at their home on Frank lin Route 4. J. L. Dills has returned to his home in Gastonia, vafter spending several days with relatives and friends in Macon county. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Norris and family have returned to their home in Atlanta, Ga., after a visit with Mrs. Norris' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank . Hill, at their home near Highlands. Airs. L. P. Compton, of Frank lin, and Atlanta, has returned from a 10-day visit with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Justus, in Washington, D. C. While there Mrs! Compton motored T W C Tohnsnn i Mr. and Mrs. Rogers Dalton through the Shenandoah Valley, I GARROU-CARPENTER from Morganton of the marriage of Miss Pauline Garrou and George C. Carpenter, of Valdese. The wedding was solemnized March 27 at the church of the Holy' Comforter at Sumter, S. C. The Rev. J. Benthan Walker, rector of the church, officiated. . Mrs. Carpenter is the youngest daughter of the late Francis Gar rou and Mrs. Garrou, of Valdese and is a popular and attractive young girl. She was graduated from Fassifern school at Hender sonville May 31. Until his death Mr. Garrou was prominent in the civic and industrial lite ot vaiaese He represented Burke county in the 1935 general assembly and was well known throughout the state. Mr. Carpenter is the son of George Carpenter, of Franklin, and U a orominent young business man o'f Valdese. He is a graduate 'of. Western Carolina Teachers' college at Cullowhee, where he was a mem her of Aloha Phi Sigma honorary fraternity. He taught in the Valdese schools until three years ago wnen he became manager of the Colonial theater. He recently acquired the Madison Theater al Madison. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter are mak ing their home with Mrs. Carpen ter's mother, Mrs. Garrou, at Val dese. ' U. D. C.
