White Pine Blight
Being Fought Here
The U. S. department of agri
Culture in cooperation with 'the
N. C. department of agriculture, has
opened a project in Al aeon county
to prevent the .spread of a white
pine blight known as white pine
blister rust. The disease has spread
from the northeastern states as
far west as Oregon and California
and south to certain parts of Vir
ginia since .it was discovered in
about 1901.'
As far as known North Carolina
is free from the blight at present.
' There is only one "means of pre
senting white pine blister rust from
entering into this sttite and that is
by destroying the host plant .that
affects its spread The host plant is
scientifically known as Ribes or
commonly' known as currant and
gooseberry bushes. These bushes
' may. catch the spores from diseased
pines as far-away-, as 200 miles and
in turn spread , disease to healthy
pines 900 to 1000 feet away. White
pine blister rust cannot spread from
pine to pine. y '
1 Since August 12, a rcw of 13
men has been working in the pine
sections of Macon county mapping
pine stands and destroying currant
and gooseberry bushes within in
fection range of the pines, Over
"1,200 acres of pine have been map
, ped to date including 825 acres of
five per cent and over, mainly in
the eastern end of the county be
low Highlands. Much of this land is
owned by the Nantahala national
forest whose officials are fully co
operating with the project.
It remains for private land owners
to do their part in helping the
workers to locate and destroy all
currant and gooseberry bushes
within 1,000. feet, of any known
White pine. ;
If the owner wishes to pull his
own bushes the Asheville office at
6(4 County Building, . will be glad
to have the owner's name, address,
and how many bushes pulled. The
agent in charge is H. A. Whitman,
Jr., who can be reached at general
delivery in Cashiers, or ' at 604
County Building, Asheville.
At this time, of year blister rust
spreads from currant and goose
berry leaves to neighboring pines
within 1,000 feet. It is therefore of
utmost importance that all bushes
be. inspected for a rusty appearance
on the under side of the leaves
and any such case should be re
ported immediately to Mr. Whitman
or to the blister rust control office
at 604 County Building, Asheville.
