MISS HELEN PATTON HONORED WITH PARTY A group of friends entertained at a dinner party at The Tavern, followed by a theatre party, Thurs day evening, September 2, honoring Miss' Helen Patton, who resigned from the Franklin high school fac ulty to teach art in the city schools at Durham. Miss Patton left for Durham Saturday, September 4. Mrs. Helen Macon presided at the dinner and Mrs. J. C. Barring ton was hostess at the theater party. Mrs. Alex Gregory and brother, Frank Guest, came in from Detroit, Mich., to see their sisfcr, Gladys Guest, who is in Angel hospital with a fractured skull -and broken collar bone, caused ' when she was thrown from a bicycle. Miss Guest is reported to be doing very nicely at present. Mrs. Gregory was call ed back to Detroit Wednesday on account of the illness of her hus band. . Miss Elizabeth Dowdle and Miss Margaret Franks left on Thursday-of the past week for Kan napolis, where they will teach school this winter. Brabson Bulgin left Wednesday morning for Detroit, Mich., where he has employment. Miss Dorothy Grindstaff and Miss Timpsey Nelr Clouse left last week for Rabun Gap, Ga., where they will enter the Rabun Gap In dustrial school. Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Hartley and daughter, Alice, of Charleston, S. C, are spending their vacation at Trimont Inn. Mr. Hartley is divi sion freight agent of the Seaboard Airline railway. v j ' : Percy J. Misses Jessie and Iva Dean Roper will leave this week for Cul lowhee to enter Western Carolina Teachers' college. Winton Perry, Phil Blumenthal, Charles Hunter, John Crawford, Bobby Sloan, Clinton Brookshire and Jimmy Perry were among the boys that left for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill last week. Roy Gibson is spending several days at Mountain Home, Tenn., where he is taking treatment for arthritis. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Baird, who have been in Franklin for a visit at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. C. D. Miss Nina Carpenter, who is teaching school at Westminister, S. C, came up for the funeral of her uncle, George T. Stiles, here Sat urday. Mr Walter Deal, of Hamilton, N. C, is here for a few days to see her mother, Mrs. J. A. Deal, who , is critically ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. J. Johns ton, at her home on Harrison avenue. Rev. and Mrs. C. C. Herbert, Jr., accompanied Miss Nina Clouse to Mount Berry school, at Mount Ber ry, Ga., where she will enter for the year. Representative R. A. Patton and John W. Edwards have returned from the Young Democratic con vention at Winston-Salem. Mr. Ed wards received a very high honor, being tendered the position of Na tional committeeman . from North Carolina. Owing to business and also being United States deputy marshal. Mr. Edwards declined this honor. Miss Cleobelle Moore, ' Miss Christine Browning and William Blaine left last week for Mars. Hill college, at Mars Mill, where they are enrolled for the year. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cunningham are spending six weeks touring the eastern part of North Carolina, the New England states and a trip through Canada. John Earl Lancaster left Friday of the past week for Maryville, Tenn., where he will enter Mary ville college this week. Garth Cunningham, who has been working jin Los Angeles, Calif., for the past year, returned to his home on Iotlaj last week. Fred .
