Postmasters Make Plans
For Celebration In
North Carolina
CHARLOTTE, Sept. 29. Post
masters of North Carolina are en
tering enthusiastically into plans
for celebration of North Carolina
Air Mail Week, according to Post
master Paul R. Younts, of Char
lotte, who has been named chair
man of the Air Mail Week com
mittee. The i observance of Air Mail
Week, which has for its purpose
making North Carolina air mail
conscious and to impress upon
business men the great value of
the use of air mail, is being spon
sored by the North Carolina asso
ciation of postmasters, with the full
cooperation of Eastern Air Lines
and the postoffice department.
President Wythe Peyton, of Ashe
ville, appointed Major Younts gen
eral chairman and announced plans
for placing every town in the state
with a landing field on the air
mail route for one day.
The observance will be on the
week of October 11-16. Harllee
Branch, second assistant postmast
er general, has pledged full cooper
ation in making the observance
successful.
On October 12, Eastern Air Line
planes will make stops at all of the
cities , and towns in North Carolina
with landing fields to pick up air
mail.
The air mail from all of the
eastern cities will . be taken to Ra
leigh and placed on E. A. L. planes
there. Air mail of towns and cities
in western North Carolina will be
brought to Charlotte and taken on
by one of the six planes' making
daily stops here.
Both planes will start from Kitty
T-TtL-' mliorA . lino tiirn r,oc Krrtl
when the Wright brothers first flew
a plane soon after the turn of the
century. ' . ' ',
Beautiful cachets are being pre
pared for each of the 50 or more
towns and cities that will be on the
one-day air mail route. A replica
of the Kitty Hawk Memorial will
be on the cachets. From this point
they will differ with each town and
city having its own individual cachet,
bearing the slogan of the city,
some date of important significance,
or some other material of which the
city is civic conscious.
Postmasters Ln each of the air
mail stops are planning to contact
representatives of civic clubs, busi
ness organizations, city and county
officials and others who can aid
in making the week a success.
Appropriate ceremonies will be
arranged at each of the points, and
officials in Charlotte and JRaleigh
will give appropriate greetings to
the special planes when they ar
rive from their pick up trips.
The officials in every city and
town in the state having a post
office will be urged by the post
master to give the airmail a trial,
and indications are that the co
operation in the observance will be
almost 100 per cent .throughout the
state.

Asheville Socia 1 Security
Office Reviews Work Done
Completing its first six months
of operation, the Asheville field of
fice of the social security board re
viewed the work it has accomplish
ed to date, and revealed its plans
for the future.,
The field office was established
last March in line with the policy
of the board to bring administra
tion of the old-age insurance pro
gram as close as possible to those
affected by it. Under its jurisdic
tion are 19 western North Carolina
counties.
In the first few months, accord
ing to Graham Martin, manager,
the work of . the local field office
was primarily of an informational
character. Through the press, radio,
and talks before civic organizations,
members of the field office staff
attempted to bring; about a wider
understanding of the old-age in
surance program. Through coopera
tion of employers, civic clubs, and
others, over 35,000 pieces of expla
natory informational material have
been distributed.
On July 1 the postoffice depart
ment turned over to the field of
fice the task of assigning social
security account numbers. From
that date through yesterday over
10,000 account numbers have been
issued from the Asheville office.
While there is a' considerable
number of employees who have not
yet made application for numbers,
Mr. Martin estimated that the
greater part of iSie employees in
this area have already received
numbers. While, this work will con
tinue, the field . office will devote
the major portion of its time in the
future to the development of
claims .under the old-age insurance
plan. . -
Through September 21, 58 claims
have been filed with the Asheville
field office. Thirty have been paid,
and the others are now being ad
justed. Employees who have become 65
since the first of the year, are en
titled to receive 34 per cent of

Only one claim has been received

Apparently, Mr. Martin said,
many persons in Macon county who
are eligible to apply for these ben

any one who thinks he may have

possible assistance will be given in
the development of the claim.
