PROGRESS IN
4-H CLUB WORK
A year of 4-H club work for the
girls of Macon county is drawing
to a close. It is with a great deal
of pleasure that the girls welcome
the boys to 4-H cluDs. Th,e best
work can be done only when boys
and girls cooperate. Girls' clubs
were conducted : in 10 communities
Mast year. One new club has 'been
organized at Otto this year. Aside
from the project work conducted
by all club members, practise is
given in conducting club meetings
and talking before club members.
The theme for the general meet
ings has been "Checking up on
Myself or Improving My Person
ality." Doctors have long treated
physical ailments but are just be
ginning to realize ,ihe j importance
of understanding the mind and
mental reactions. Children in pro
gressive schools are studying men
tal health. They are learning to
understand the mind.as they prev
iously have been taught, through
physiology and biology to under
stand the body. At the present
time mental clinics are being con
ducted throughout the country in
order to assist people to adjust
themselves mentally and overcome
fears and inhibitions which affect
them and render them unfit phys
ically to take their places in the
work of the world. How much bet
ter to1 train our children to under
stand themselves and correct these
serious mental maladjustments early
rather than allow them to become
handicapped by them later in life.
Girls in 4-H clubs during the past
year have overcome tempers, done
away with bashfulness, set stub
borness aside because they checked
on themselves and found these
qualities among their liabilities and
not their assets. Stories have been
told of successful people, bringing
out the qualities which made them
successful. Important plays have
been given to show the value of
proper adjustment. These stories
and -plays have been written by
boys and girls ' in the grammar
grades. They train the mind to
think, the hand to write, , the heart
to feel, and bring' out points along
the line of physical . and mental
health. They aid children to over
come haskfulness which is -'a form
of fear, to express themselves and
give self-mastery and self-confidence.
An original story and plays fol
lows. Let us encourage our boys
and girls to take part in 4-H club
work. .
A THOUGHTFUL GIRL
SCENE: In the School Yard
Jane : Patricia, who are you go
ing to inyite to your Halloween
party ?
Pat: Oh, here I have my list all
made out, Pearl,, John, Dorothy,
Helen, Paul, Dick, Margaret, Billy,
Louise, and Mary.
Jane: Aren't you going to invite
Susie?
Pat: Nof I'm not going to invite
Susie; she isn't of our class. She
doesn't have a nice party dress to
wear. I'm going to wear my pink
chiffon with my pink slippers to
match. We are 'going to have the
nicest things to eat, cake and ice
cream.
Jane: Susie is one of the nicest
girls -in our ckiss. Don't you re
member when she worked an arith
metic problem for you? You
shouldn't be that way.
Bob : Yes, I think we should in
vite Susie too. She is a nice 'girl.
I saw her taking a basket of fruits
to a widow down the street. She
tries to help in every way she can.
, Richard : . No I we are not going
to invite Susie. She lives in the
poorest house in town, a little
log house down by the railroad.
We don't associate with that class
of folks.
Pat: Jane, what are you so quiet
about ? .
Jane; I. was just thinking about
poor Susie, how bad she would feel
if all the rest . of the class were
there arid she is left out. Patricia,
do yoji remember what the subject
of our B. Y. P. U. lesson was Sun
day night? It was "Do unto others'
as you would have them do unto
you." Are you going to follow your
own advice r
Pat : Well, maybe I'm wrong, I'm
going and tell her how much ,1
want her to come. I want her to
spend the night after the party.
Richard: Yes. I'll accompany her
to the party if she will allow me. '
Pat: Come, let's go now and in
vite her.
